Clemson CB Ashton Hampton Sidelined After Shoulder Surgery
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney revealed that standout cornerback Ashton Hampton underwent shoulder surgery and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. The sophomore defensive back did not participate in Saturday’s spring game while wearing a sling on his right arm.
Hampton emerged as a key contributor during his freshman campaign, starting four games and recording two interceptions – including one returned for a touchdown. The Florida native finished 2024 with 27 tackles and seven pass breakups while appearing in all 14 games.
Swinney described the procedure as a cleanup of a re-aggravated injury, stating Hampton would “be back, ready to go” for fall camp. The Tigers are counting on the young defensive back to play a significant role in new defensive coordinator Tom Allen’s scheme this season.
The injury puts Hampton’s summer workout regimen in question, though the program expects him fully recovered before Clemson’s season opener. His absence creates additional reps for Clemson’s secondary depth during offseason practices.
Hampton’s development remains crucial for a Tigers defense looking to improve after allowing 24+ points in six games last season. Clemson finished 10-4 in 2024, falling to Texas in the first round of the expanded College Football Playoff.
