The Texas Rangers are getting closer to welcoming Jack Leiter back to their pitching staff as the young right-hander continues his recovery from ankle surgery. Leiter made his second rehabilitation appearance Thursday night for Double-A Frisco, taking another important step toward potentially returning to the Major League club before the end of the season.
Leiter underwent arthroscopic surgery on June 23 to remove a loose body from his right ankle. The procedure came during a difficult season for the 26-year-old pitcher, who posted a 5.29 ERA across 15 starts before being sidelined.
Although his latest rehabilitation outing was not flawless, the Rangers will likely be encouraged by the progress he continues to make physically. The main objective at this stage is to ensure Leiter’s ankle responds well to increased workload and that he can build enough stamina to contribute effectively when he eventually returns.
Leiter Shows Promise Before Struggling Late
Leiter finished his second rehab start with five strikeouts over three-plus innings. He allowed five runs, although only four were earned, while giving up three hits and issuing two walks. He threw 59 pitches, with 38 finding the strike zone.
The outing started positively. Leiter looked particularly sharp during the first two innings, displaying the ability that made him one of the Rangers’ highly regarded pitching prospects. However, his performance began to unravel in the third inning.
An error opened the door for a four-run inning by Wichita, putting additional pressure on Leiter. He then returned for the fourth inning but issued a leadoff walk before his night came to an end.
The results were not exactly what the Rangers would have hoped to see from the entire outing, but rehabilitation starts are primarily about building back strength, command and endurance rather than simply evaluating the final line on the scoreboard.
Leiter’s recovery will therefore continue to be monitored closely as the Rangers determine when he is physically ready for another step.
Rangers Still Determining His Role
One of the biggest questions surrounding Leiter’s eventual return is where he will fit on the Rangers’ pitching staff.
Leiter indicated that there have not yet been conversations with him about continuing his buildup alongside the Major League team. However, internal discussions have reportedly included the possibility of bringing him back as a reliever during the final stretch of the season.
That possibility has become more complicated following Nathan Eovaldi’s placement on the injured list because of elbow inflammation.
With the Rangers once again facing uncertainty within their rotation, Leiter could potentially become more valuable as a starting pitcher if his health allows him to handle that workload. At the same time, returning him to the bullpen could provide another option for the club as it navigates the final weeks of the campaign.
For now, another rehabilitation start could be in Leiter’s future. The Rangers are expected to base their decision largely on how his ankle responds to the latest workload.
Leiter has emphasized that he is focused on taking the recovery process one day at a time rather than looking too far ahead.
Leiter Focused on Recovery
Speaking about his recovery, Leiter explained that simply getting back into a competitive environment has been an important part of the process.
He said being around another team and experiencing the normal atmosphere that comes with playing in a game has been encouraging. After his first rehab appearance, he was pleased with how things went and expected to continue building his workload.
The right-hander also acknowledged that there are several factors involved in his recovery, meaning each day can provide new information about how his body is responding.
That measured approach is particularly important given the nature of his injury. The Rangers cannot afford to rush Leiter back and risk another setback, especially with the pitching staff already dealing with health concerns.
Texas Needs Pitching Help
The timing of Leiter’s recovery is especially significant for the Rangers.
Texas had appeared to be moving toward a healthier rotation after Cody Bradford and Jordan Montgomery returned from the injured list following their respective injury recoveries. However, Eovaldi’s elbow issue has once again created uncertainty.
The Rangers are therefore entering the crucial portion of the season with a need for additional pitching depth.
If Leiter can successfully complete his rehabilitation and regain his previous form, his return could provide the organization with a major boost. Whether that contribution comes through the rotation or bullpen, having another healthy arm available could make a significant difference.
His return would also give the Rangers another option as they attempt to navigate the final stretch of the season.
Arozarena Produces a Historic Day for Seattle
While the Rangers continue to wait for Leiter’s return, another American League contender produced one of the most memorable performances of the weekend.
Seattle Mariners star Randy Arozarena delivered an extraordinary performance against the Chicago Cubs, hitting two home runs and making an outstanding defensive play before ending the game with a walk-off blast.
The Mariners defeated the Cubs 5-4 at T-Mobile Park, with Arozarena responsible for several of the game’s biggest moments.
His first home run came from the leadoff spot after Brendan Donovan was scratched shortly before the game following an incident in the batting cages. Arozarena responded immediately, crushing the first pitch he saw as Seattle’s new leadoff hitter.
But his most spectacular moment came in the third inning when he robbed Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya of a potential home run.
Arozarena tracked the ball toward the warning track before timing his jump perfectly and reaching over the wall to make the remarkable catch.
Arozarena Saves His Best Moment for Last
The outfield gem would have been enough to make the day memorable, but Arozarena wasn’t finished.
The Mariners entered the final stages of the game trailing and appeared to be running out of opportunities. After Weston Wilson doubled and Leo Rivas delivered another timely hit, Arozarena came to the plate with Seattle’s winning run in position.
He watched a slider for a called strike before Cubs reliever Jacob Webb returned to the same pitch.
This time, Arozarena was ready.
He drove the ball deep and sent it over the wall for a walk-off home run, completing an extraordinary individual performance and giving Seattle a dramatic 5-4 victory.
According to historical records, Arozarena became only the seventh player to hit both a leadoff home run and a walk-off home run in the same game.
Even more impressively, he joined a very small group of players who accomplished the feat on the first and final pitches their teams saw in a game.
Arozarena’s Heroics Boost Mariners’ Playoff Push
The victory was especially important for Seattle’s postseason ambitions.
With Texas and Houston both losing, the Mariners gained valuable ground in the American League West. Seattle improved to 62-68 and moved within three games of the division lead.
The victory also secured the Mariners’ series against the Cubs, who had been among baseball’s strongest teams since the All-Star break.
For Arozarena, the performance represented more than individual statistics. He repeatedly emphasized that helping Seattle win was the most important part of his remarkable day.
His two home runs and spectacular defensive play gave the Mariners exactly what they needed at a critical point in the season.
Two American League Stories to Watch
Leiter’s rehabilitation and Arozarena’s historic performance highlight two very different developments involving American League contenders.
For Texas, the focus is on health and pitching depth. Leiter’s eventual return could strengthen a staff that has been hit by multiple injuries. The Rangers will need to determine whether he is best suited for the rotation or bullpen while making sure his ankle is fully ready for the demands of Major League competition.
For Seattle, Arozarena’s performance provided a major boost at exactly the right time. His ability to impact the game with his bat and glove demonstrated why he remains such an important piece of the Mariners’ playoff hopes.
As the regular season enters its decisive stretch, both situations could have significant consequences. If Leiter returns healthy and effective, Texas could gain an important pitching weapon. Meanwhile, if Arozarena continues producing performances like Saturday’s, Seattle’s postseason push could become even more compelling.
For now, Rangers fans will be watching Leiter’s next rehabilitation step closely, while Mariners supporters will be hoping Arozarena’s incredible weekend is the beginning of another surge at the most important point of the season.
