The Philadelphia Phillies have experienced a turbulent 2026 campaign, with the team going through several dramatic changes in form throughout the season. After a difficult start that resulted in manager Rob Thomson being dismissed, Philadelphia managed to recover and put itself back into contention for a postseason berth. However, another difficult stretch in July once again put their playoff hopes under pressure.
The Phillies have responded strongly in August, gaining valuable ground on the Atlanta Braves while creating some separation from the teams competing for the National League Wild Card positions. Despite the club’s recent improvement, several players have continued to struggle, and one of the most notable concerns has been star shortstop Trea Turner.
Turner has been identified as one of Major League Baseball’s biggest disappointments of the 2026 season by Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report. The criticism surrounding the veteran shortstop is based largely on two areas of his game: his declining offensive production and a significant regression defensively.
Turner’s Offensive Numbers Raise Concerns
Turner entered the 2026 season with expectations of being one of the Phillies’ most important offensive contributors. Instead, his production has fallen considerably compared with what Philadelphia has come to expect from him.
Through 125 games, Turner has recorded only 0.2 bWAR. That figure is particularly concerning when compared with his previous seasons in Philadelphia. His lowest bWAR total with the Phillies before this season was 2.8 in 2024. Ironically, that was also the season in which Turner earned an All-Star selection with Philadelphia.
The shortstop has received plenty of opportunities at the plate, leading the National League with 514 at-bats. However, those opportunities have not translated into the type of production the Phillies expected when they signed him to a massive contract.
Turner is batting .247 this season, while his on-base percentage stands at .300. His OPS has fallen to .693, and his OPS+ is only 84. That OPS+ mark represents the worst full-season level of his major-league career.
The only time Turner posted a lower OPS+ came during his rookie season in 2015, when he appeared in just 27 games and received only 40 at-bats. That comparison highlights just how unusual his struggles have been during the current campaign.
Turner has still demonstrated some of the athletic ability that has made him such a dangerous player throughout his career. He has recorded 17 home runs and 17 stolen bases, showing that his speed and power have not completely disappeared. Nevertheless, his overall consistency at the plate has been a major issue.
For a player expected to occupy a key position in the Phillies’ lineup, the decline has been difficult to overlook.
Defensive Regression Adds to the Problem
Turner’s struggles have not been limited to his offense. His performance at shortstop has also taken a major step backward.
The defensive decline is particularly surprising because Turner had a strong season with the glove in 2025. He committed only eight errors last year and produced a positive Defensive Runs Saved figure of two.
The situation has changed dramatically in 2026.
Turner has already committed 19 errors this season, more than twice his total from the previous year. His Defensive Runs Saved has also fallen from +2 in 2025 to -13 this season.
That dramatic change has contributed heavily to the perception that Turner has been one of the league’s most disappointing players. When a player is struggling offensively, strong defense can help offset some of the damage. Likewise, an offensive star can sometimes overcome defensive shortcomings by producing consistently at the plate.
Turner, however, has struggled in both areas this season.
His defensive problems are particularly significant because shortstop is one of the most demanding defensive positions on the field. Mistakes at the position can create additional opportunities for opposing offenses and place more pressure on the pitching staff.
Phillies Face a Major Contract Concern
Another factor making Turner’s 2026 struggles particularly concerning is the length and size of his contract.
Philadelphia signed Turner to an 11-year, $300 million deal that keeps him under contract through the 2033 season. At the time, the agreement represented the organization’s confidence that Turner would remain one of the team’s premier players for many years.
However, the Phillies are now entering a situation where they have to consider whether his current level of production could become a longer-term issue.
Turner is only in the fourth year of the contract, meaning Philadelphia still has many seasons remaining on the deal. If his current performance proves to be temporary, the concerns could quickly disappear. But if the decline continues, the contract could become increasingly difficult for the organization to manage.
The Phillies will therefore be hoping that Turner can rediscover the form that made him one of baseball’s most dynamic players.
Could a Position Change Help?
One possible solution could involve moving Turner away from shortstop.
A transition to another position, such as second base or the outfield, could potentially reduce some of the defensive pressure currently affecting his performance. Turner possesses considerable athletic ability and has the versatility to contribute at different positions.
For now, however, Philadelphia appears committed to keeping him at shortstop.
The organization will likely continue giving him opportunities to regain his confidence and improve his performance rather than making an immediate positional change. With the postseason race becoming increasingly important, the Phillies need Turner to find a way to become a productive contributor again.
A Crucial Stretch Ahead
The Phillies’ strong August has placed them in a much better position than they were earlier in the season. Their ability to gain ground in the National League has given the team renewed hope of making another postseason appearance.
However, the club will need contributions from its biggest stars if it hopes to make a serious playoff run.
Turner remains one of the most important players on Philadelphia’s roster because of his contract, experience and overall talent. Despite his disappointing numbers, the Phillies cannot simply ignore his importance to the lineup and defense.
The organization will be hoping that the second half of the season provides Turner with an opportunity to reverse the trend. A strong finish could change the conversation surrounding his season and give Philadelphia an important boost heading into October.
For now, though, Turner’s combination of declining offensive numbers and defensive struggles has made him a legitimate candidate for one of the league’s biggest disappointments in 2026.
The Phillies have managed to overcome several challenges this season, but getting their star shortstop back to his best level could be one of their most important tasks as they continue their push toward the postseason.
