Yankees Legend John Sterling Returns to Radio With New Show — But Not to the Broadcast Booth
Veteran New York Yankees announcer John Sterling is stepping back into the spotlight — but not back into the ballpark. Instead of returning to calling games at Yankee Stadium, Sterling will debut his new radio show, The John Sterling Show, on 77 WABC in New York City.
The program premieres this Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, coinciding with or just after the Yankees’ home game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Sterling, 86, said, “I think it’s a good thing. I’ll be the only one doing sports there,” in an interview with NJ.com.
Sterling was the full-time radio voice of the Yankees from 1989 to 2023, calling over 5,000 consecutive games. He famously called home runs for countless players—from legends like Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, and Aaron Judge, to more obscure names like Dean Anna and Chris Gittens.
Though he officially retired in April 2023, Sterling made a brief return during the Yankees’ playoff run later that year. However, he will not be calling any games in the 2025 season, not even as a fill-in for new announcer Dave Sims.
The new show will allow Sterling to expand beyond baseball, covering broader sports topics. He’ll have no shortage of material in his debut, with headlines like the New York Giants trading up to draft Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart and the Knicks leading their playoff series against the Detroit Pistons.
