Bills May Draft Syracuse RB as James Cook’s Replacement
The Buffalo Bills have locked in several core players with long-term deals this offseason, including star quarterback Josh Allen and cornerback Christian Benford. However, running back James Cook remains without an extension after publicly demanding a $15 million annual contract. His request would make him the third-highest-paid running back in the NFL, trailing only Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey.
Cook has been vocal about his desire for a major payday, even appearing on Nightcap with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson to defend his stance. “I’ve put in the work my whole career, and I believe I deserve top-tier compensation,” he said. Despite his efforts, Bills GM Brandon Beane has signaled that no deal is imminent, shifting focus to the draft and salary cap management.
With Cook’s future uncertain, The Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer predicts the Bills will target Syracuse standout LeQuint Allen in the later rounds. The 6-foot, 204-pound running back is known for his vision, versatility, and ability to contribute as a pass-catcher and blocker. Analysts believe he could develop into a reliable NFL starter.
LeQuint Allen’s college performance—including 32 total touchdowns—makes him an intriguing option for Buffalo. His skill set aligns with the Bills’ need for a balanced back who can handle third-down duties. If drafted, he could quickly compete for snaps, especially if Cook’s contract dispute remains unresolved.
As the draft approaches, Buffalo faces a pivotal decision: meet Cook’s demands or invest in a younger, more cost-effective alternative. With limited cap flexibility, the Bills may opt for the latter, turning to the draft to fill their backfield needs. LeQuint Allen could be the solution they’re looking for.
