Denver Broncos defensive lineman Matt Henningsen is feared to have suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers on August 7. The injury occurred just days before Denver’s preseason opener against San Francisco. Although Henningsen was likely competing for a depth role, the setback is significant for a player known for his work ethic and reliability.
A sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin, Henningsen played in all 34 regular-season games during his first two seasons. In 2024, he spent the year on Denver’s practice squad but remained in the team’s plans heading into 2025. At the time of his injury, he was listed third on the depth chart behind Zach Allen and Jordan Jackson at one of the defensive end spots.
Henningsen built his reputation as a tough, high-effort player during his college career. At Wisconsin, he earned All-Big Ten honors in 2021 and impressed scouts at his pro day with elite testing numbers, including a 37.5-inch vertical leap and a 10-foot broad jump. NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein once described him as a “phone booth brawler” who thrives in close-contact situations.
Denver’s defensive line is considered one of the best in the league. Led by All-Pros Zach Allen and edge rusher Nik Bonitto, along with D.J. Jones, Jonathon Cooper, and John Franklin-Myers, the group powered the Broncos to an NFL-leading 63 sacks in 2024. Henningsen’s injury could affect the team’s rotational depth and force the coaching staff to evaluate its options.
Before the injury, Franklin-Myers had been viewed as a potential trade candidate due to contract considerations, with free agency looming in 2026. However, the loss of Henningsen may cause Denver to hold on to him to ensure depth across the defensive front. For now, the Broncos will wait for official confirmation on Henningsen’s status, but a torn Achilles would almost certainly end his 2025 season.
