Justin Simmons, once a cornerstone of the Denver Broncos’ defense and a four-time All-Pro, is now a free agent at 31. After spending the 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons, the veteran safety is reportedly drawing interest from around the league — including from a team in his old division.
According to CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin, Simmons could potentially sign with the Las Vegas Raiders, one of Denver’s AFC West rivals. Benjamin suggested the Raiders could benefit from adding a seasoned defensive back like Simmons under head coach Pete Carroll’s defensive system.
If Simmons were to join the Raiders — or another AFC West team — it would create the possibility of two revenge games against the Broncos, who released him last offseason.
One factor favoring Las Vegas is their available salary cap space and a familiar face on the coaching staff. Raiders pass game coordinator Joe Woods was Simmons’ first defensive backs coach in Denver, which could help facilitate a reunion.
Simmons has a strong resume, including leading the league in interceptions in 2022. While his production has declined somewhat with age, he still provides starting-level talent or at least valuable depth for any secondary.
It’s likely that a team won’t sign Simmons until closer to training camp or preseason, once rosters take shape or injuries create opportunities.
