Following the conclusion of their mandatory minicamp on June 12, the Buffalo Bills now look ahead to training camp, which begins on July 23. While the team currently has 90 players on its roster, only 53 will remain when the regular season kicks off on September 7.
Among the six running backs currently with the team, two may be facing uncertain futures. Last season, the Bills kept four backs on the active roster, including a fullback, and they are expected to do the same this year. However, performances during training camp and preseason games could still shift the outcome.
One player on the bubble is Frank Gore Jr., son of former Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore. Gore Jr. is at risk of being released for the second consecutive season, according to a prediction from Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic. Despite a strong college career at Southern Mississippi, where he rushed for over 4,000 yards, Gore Jr. went undrafted in 2024.
He had a solid preseason performance last year, rushing for 163 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries, along with 16 receiving yards on four catches. Nonetheless, he was released during final roster cuts but was later signed to the practice squad.
The Bills brought him back on a two-year contract worth $1.853 million, though only $8,000 of that is guaranteed. This means the team can release him again with minimal financial impact.
Buscaglia wrote that the running back situation appears largely set, with the same four players from last year likely to return. Still, he noted that an “unbelievable preseason” from either Gore Jr. or Darrynton Evans could change that.
