Yankees Trade Rumor: Possible Deal for All-Star Infielder Ryan McMahon
As one of the top contenders in Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees are expected to be active ahead of the trade deadline. One position they may look to strengthen is third base, and a recent proposal suggests a trade for Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon.
In this potential deal, the Yankees would send two of their top-10 prospects — Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and Henry Lalane — to Colorado in exchange for McMahon. The 30-year-old infielder is currently in the fourth year of a six-year, $70 million contract, which would keep him under team control through the 2027 season.
McMahon earned All-Star honors in 2024 and, despite a slow start this year, has hit 12 home runs with 25 RBIs while batting .225. His defensive skills at third base would address an area of concern for the Yankees.
Rodriguez-Cruz, ranked sixth in the Yankees’ system, was acquired from the Red Sox last year. He’s had a strong showing in High-A ball this season, posting a 2.29 ERA across 12 appearances. Lalane, a left-handed pitcher and the Yankees’ ninth-ranked prospect, has struggled in A-ball and has a projected major league debut in 2027.
McMahon has been mentioned as a trade target for the Yankees by MLB insider Mark Feinsand, who noted that the Rockies may be willing to part with him given their current rebuilding phase. With a league-worst 17-60 record, Colorado could look to move veteran players for future assets.
Still, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed caution about the trade market. While acknowledging areas for improvement, he emphasized the difficulty of making deals midseason.
“We’ll see. It’s hard to make improvements this part of the season,” Cashman told the New York Post. “We’ve got what we’ve got… If we can improve on things, we’ll try to do that, as well.”
The Yankees currently lead the AL East with a 45-32 record.
