The club has recalled infielder Cody Freeman and added veteran pitcher Marco Gonzales to the major league roster from Triple-A Round Rock.
To create room for the two players on the active roster, Texas optioned infielder Cam Cauley and right-handed pitcher Ben Peoples to Round Rock. The Rangers also had to make a corresponding move on their 40-man roster, designating pitcher Luis Curvelo for assignment to open a spot for Gonzales.
The decision to bring Gonzales back to the major leagues comes at a particularly important time for the Rangers’ pitching staff. Jacob deGrom was able to work only two innings in his most recent outing, leaving Texas in need of a reliever who can provide multiple innings and help protect the rest of the bullpen.
Peoples was the player sent down to Triple-A to create that pitching spot. Because he has minor league options remaining, the Rangers had the flexibility to move him without exposing him to waivers. His demotion gives the organization an opportunity to add Gonzales, who is now set to begin his second stint with the Rangers during the 2026 campaign.
Gonzales’ return could prove useful for a Texas team that has been forced to manage its pitching workload carefully. When a starting pitcher exits a game early, the bullpen can quickly become overworked. Having a pitcher capable of covering several innings can therefore be extremely valuable, particularly during a stretch in which the Rangers are trying to remain competitive.
While the reasoning behind the pitching move is relatively straightforward, the decision to replace Cauley with Freeman is more difficult to understand from a purely statistical perspective. Freeman had been considered a candidate for a spot on the Rangers’ Opening Day roster before injuries disrupted his season.
The infielder has missed a significant portion of the 2026 campaign while dealing with back and neck problems. Despite those setbacks, the Rangers have continued to value what he brings to the clubhouse and on the field. His energy and enthusiasm appear to have played a role in the decision to bring him back to the major league roster.
That element could be particularly important for Texas right now. The Rangers’ offense has struggled to generate consistent momentum, and the lineup has appeared stagnant at times. Freeman’s return may therefore be an attempt to inject some life into a group that has struggled to find its rhythm.
Rather than simply focusing on offensive production, the Rangers could be hoping that Freeman’s presence provides a spark for the team. Baseball teams often rely on players who bring energy and competitiveness, especially during difficult stretches of a season. If Freeman can contribute offensively while also providing that spark, the move could become more meaningful than it initially appears.
The other major transaction involved Curvelo, who was designated for assignment to clear a place for Gonzales on the 40-man roster. Curvelo will now be exposed to waivers, giving the other 29 major league clubs an opportunity to claim him.
There is a reasonable possibility that Curvelo could clear waivers and remain within the Rangers organization. His performance this season, however, has not been encouraging. The pitcher has taken a noticeable step backward compared with last year and has struggled at both the major league and Triple-A levels.
Curvelo has posted a 9.58 ERA in the majors this season, while his ERA at Triple-A has also remained high at 8.42. His problems have extended beyond simply allowing runs. He has struggled with his command and has also shown a tendency to surrender home runs, two issues that have made it difficult for him to establish himself as a dependable bullpen option.
For Texas, designating Curvelo for assignment represents a willingness to move on from a pitcher who has not been able to reproduce the progress he showed previously. If he clears waivers, the Rangers could potentially retain him and attempt to help him rediscover his form in the minor leagues.
Taken together, the roster moves demonstrate that the Rangers are attempting to address several problems at once. Gonzales gives the pitching staff another potential source of length, while Freeman gives the club another position player and potentially a much-needed injection of energy.
The decision to send Cauley to Triple-A also reflects the organization’s ability to continue developing its younger players away from the pressure of the major leagues. Meanwhile, Peoples will have an opportunity to continue pitching at Round Rock while remaining part of the Rangers’ organizational depth.
For a team that has experienced an inconsistent stretch, these moves could have an impact beyond the individual players involved. Texas needs reliable pitching depth, particularly when its starters cannot work deep into games. At the same time, the offense needs to find ways to generate more production and consistency.
Gonzales’ ability to provide innings could help reduce the burden on the bullpen, while Freeman’s return could give the Rangers another option in the infield and potentially provide the kind of enthusiasm the team believes it needs.
Ultimately, the success of these transactions will depend on what the players do once they are back with the major league club. Gonzales will be expected to provide stability whenever the Rangers need multiple innings, while Freeman will have an opportunity to show that he can contribute after missing much of the season.
