The St. Louis Cardinals have officially promoted right-handed pitcher Peter Strzelecki to the major league roster after selecting his contract. The move fills an open spot on the club’s 40-man roster. To make room on the active roster, the Cardinals optioned fellow right-hander Hunter Dobbins to Triple-A Memphis.
Strzelecki’s promotion comes only days after he signed a minor league contract with St. Louis. Following the agreement, he made one appearance for the Cardinals’ Single-A affiliate in Palm Beach before quickly earning a call to the majors. The timing of the move is largely tied to the team’s bullpen needs. Dobbins logged 5⅓ innings in relief during Sunday’s game, making him unavailable for the next few days, so the Cardinals opted to bring in a fresh arm.
The 31-year-old has experienced one of the busiest seasons of his professional career, moving between multiple organizations while continuing to deliver solid performances on the mound. He originally opened the year with the Milwaukee Brewers on a minor league contract. Milwaukee briefly added him to its major league roster in May but designated him for assignment the following day before he had the opportunity to appear in a game.
After clearing waivers, Strzelecki elected free agency and joined the New York Yankees organization on another minor league deal. He later exercised an opt-out clause, returned to the Brewers on a new agreement, and once again opted out before ultimately signing with the Cardinals. Despite the constant movement, he has consistently produced effective results.
Across his time in the minor leagues this season, Strzelecki has pitched 32 innings while posting a 3.94 ERA. However, several underlying metrics indicate he has performed even better than that number suggests. He has struck out 28.6% of opposing hitters while issuing walks at an impressive 4.5% rate, both well above league averages. His ability to induce ground balls has also been a positive, with a 44% ground-ball rate helping limit damaging contact.
Some of the runs charged against him may have resulted from unfavorable luck. Opponents have posted a .317 batting average on balls put into play, a figure that is somewhat higher than expected and could indicate that more balls have found holes than normal. If those numbers normalize, his overall production could improve even further.
Although he has spent much of the year in the minors, Strzelecki is no stranger to pitching in the big leagues. Over parts of previous seasons with the Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Cleveland Guardians, he has accumulated 83⅔ major league innings while recording a strong 3.44 ERA. During that stretch, he paired a respectable 24% strikeout rate with an 8.4% walk rate, demonstrating the ability to retire hitters while limiting free passes.
His experience at the highest level, combined with his strong minor league performance in 2026, likely convinced the Cardinals that he could provide immediate bullpen depth as they continue pushing through a competitive stretch of the season.
Even so, Strzelecki’s stay on the active roster may not be guaranteed. Because he has exhausted his minor league options, the Cardinals cannot freely move him between the majors and Triple-A without exposing him to waivers. That reality could complicate roster decisions over the coming days.
St. Louis also faces important choices ahead of the trade deadline. Entering the season, the organization appeared to be transitioning toward a rebuilding phase, but the club has remained competitive. At 53-53, the Cardinals sit only 1.5 games behind a playoff position, leaving the front office with difficult decisions about whether to buy, sell, or pursue a combination of both strategies.
Should the Cardinals decide to move veteran relievers before the deadline, pitchers such as Dustin May, Ryne Stanek, or Riley O’Brien could become trade candidates. Departures from the bullpen would likely create additional opportunities for Strzelecki to remain on the major league roster. On the other hand, if St. Louis strengthens its bullpen by acquiring outside talent, his roster spot could quickly come under pressure.
For now, however, Strzelecki has earned another opportunity to prove himself in the majors. After navigating multiple organizations and maintaining steady production throughout the season, he will look to capitalize on his latest chance and establish himself as a reliable option in the Cardinals’ bullpen during the crucial weeks ahead.
