Salford Red Devils coach gives warning on star man Nene Macdonald’s success

Salford Red Devils assistant coach Krisnan Inu has praised Nene Macdonald for his impressive first season with the club, attributing much of his success to the influence of head coach Paul Rowley.

Macdonald, a Papua New Guinea international, left Leeds Rhinos under controversial circumstances towards the end of last season. After returning to Australia for the birth of his child, he missed his scheduled return date and did not return to Headingley, leading to his contract being terminated.

Following this tumultuous exit, Macdonald signed a three-year deal with the Red Devils and has since made a significant impact, becoming a key player in Rowley’s squad.

Inu commented to Love Rugby League ahead of Salford’s clash with St Helens, “He’s been playing well, he’s turned up. He’s found a love for the sport again in top-grade rugby league, and it’s showing in his performances.”

“The boys around him are a good crew, but he’s a likeable character, and it makes it 10 times easier when you’re happier off the field,” Inu added.

During his time at Headingley, Macdonald made 20 appearances but scored only two tries and, like many of his Leeds teammates last year, struggled with consistency and delivering in crucial moments.

In stark contrast, Macdonald has already scored eight tries in his first 19 appearances for Salford and has become a reliable performer across various aspects of the game.

Inu noted, “I feel he’s a bit more refreshed. He’s had a lot of different coaches, but he’s found one who fits him and how he plays. The clarity he gets is valuable; we love to see him play, and we’ve given him the freedom to express himself.”

He added, “He’s a character, so you don’t want to take that away from certain players.”
