A two-time former Wigan Athletic player, has been called “gold dust” after agreeing to a two-year contract with Nick Powell at Stockport County.
After leaving Blackpool, Callum Connolly, the 26-year-old became a free agent. He played in 17 league games for Latics during each of his two loan stints from Everton, which ended in 2016–17 and 2018–19.
And Stockport think that by bringing him into their League Two championship-winning team, they pulled off “a brilliant coup.”
“Callum is a fantastic asset to our team due to his experience and versatility,” stated football director Simon Wilson. “Players such as Callum are rare gems because they can perform at a high level at many positions. This will be useful to us during the course of a season consisting of around 50 games as we will face various difficulties from opponents and selection problems.
“He has previous experience working with our personnel, and both their and other references’ character recommendations are of the highest calibre. We are excited to have him join our team and hope that our supporters will get to witness him in action.
Connolly rose through the Everton ranks and played for England at all levels, including the Under-17 and Under-21 squads.
“To sign someone of Callum’s character, versatility, and experience—having played over half of his career in the Championship—is a brilliant coup for the club,” manager Dave Challinor continued.
In terms of squad dynamics, versatility alone arguably doesn’t do him justice because he can play as a ‘8’, a defensive midfielder, or anywhere in between in a back four or five.
“He’s previously worked with backroom staff members, and they were all very positive about the effect he may have on our team, so personally, I’m really looking forward to working with him.
“I know how much he’s looking forward to a fresh start and incentive to really go on and get back to the levels he’s been at earlier in his career. He had a terrible conclusion to the season, in his opinion.
“He’s in his prime years and joins our team at a great age, so I’m sure he’ll be a great asset as we take on this exciting challenge,”
