The New York Mets appear to have avoided a potentially serious setback after rookie outfielder Carson Benge suffered a frightening injury during Friday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although the young star left the contest after crashing into the outfield wall, the team’s initial medical evaluation offered encouraging news.
Interim manager Andy Green revealed after the game that X-rays taken on Benge’s left wrist showed no fractures. While the rookie is still dealing with soreness and stiffness, the early diagnosis gave the Mets reason to be optimistic that the injury may not force him into an extended absence.
The incident occurred during New York’s 6-4 victory over Pittsburgh when Benge made one of the game’s most impressive defensive plays. Racing toward the left-field corner, the rookie slid to make a spectacular catch that robbed Pirates hitter Ronny Simon of what appeared to be an extra-base hit. However, the momentum of the play carried Benge directly into the outfield wall, causing him to jam his left wrist on impact.
