The 2026 season has been an exciting one for followers of the St. Louis Cardinals’ farm system. Widely regarded as one of baseball’s deepest organizations, the Cardinals continue to produce standout performances across multiple minor league levels. With only a few weeks remaining before the minor league schedule concludes, several prospects still have an opportunity to strengthen their standing within the organization’s long-term plans.
Some players are knocking on the door of the major leagues, others are returning from injuries, while a few are looking to complete breakout campaigns that could dramatically elevate their prospect status entering 2027.
Prospects Waiting for Their Major League Opportunity
Although St. Louis has already introduced several young players to the big leagues this season—including JJ Wetherholt, Bryan Torres, Blaze Jordan, Jimmy Crooks, Luis Gastelum, and Nathan Church—there are still several notable prospects who could make their MLB debuts before the season concludes.
Among them are outfielder Joshua Baez and catcher Leonardo Bernal, both of whom already occupy spots on the Cardinals’ 40-man roster. While neither player may be completely polished, giving them an opportunity in the majors would provide the front office with valuable information before planning next season’s roster.
Another intriguing name is reliever Cade Winquest. Since returning to the Cardinals organization from the New York Yankees, he has largely flown under the radar. His traditional numbers, including a 5.74 ERA, don’t immediately stand out, but advanced metrics paint a far different picture. His expected fielding independent pitching (xFIP) sits significantly lower, suggesting he has pitched much better than the results indicate.

Quinn Mathews Appears to Be Turning a Corner
One prospect whose season has been closely monitored is left-handed pitcher Quinn Mathews.
Not long ago, Mathews ranked among baseball’s fastest-rising pitching prospects, but command issues slowed his ascent throughout 2026. At times he displayed dominant stuff capable of overwhelming hitters, while in other outings inconsistent control prevented him from reaching his potential.
Recently, however, encouraging signs have emerged.
Across his last three starts, Mathews has posted an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 18-to-3. Looking at his previous eight starts overall, he has logged more than 45 innings while issuing only 16 walks a substantial improvement from earlier in the year.
The improvement isn’t simply luck.
Earlier this season, Mathews consistently struggled to throw strikes, with fewer than 41 percent of his pitches landing inside the strike zone. More recently, that percentage has climbed above league average, thanks largely to improved command of his four-seam fastball.
Even more encouraging is that he has maintained his velocity while limiting hard contact. If this trend continues over the final stretch, Mathews could reestablish himself as one of the Cardinals’ top pitching prospects and position himself for a major league opportunity.
Players Looking to Make Up for Lost Time
Injuries interrupted the seasons of several promising Cardinals prospects, but each has returned with enough time remaining to make a positive impression before the offseason.
Brandon Clarke
Perhaps no pitcher has generated more excitement in a brief sample than Brandon Clarke.
During his return with Low-A Palm Beach, Clarke reached an eye-popping 103.1 mph with his fastball, immediately reminding scouts why his raw arsenal ranks among the best in the organization.
If he stays healthy and continues pitching effectively, Clarke could quickly climb national prospect rankings before the season ends.
Cooper Hjerpe
Left-hander Cooper Hjerpe has also looked sharp following his return.
Through his first handful of innings at Double-A, he has struck out hitters at an outstanding rate while showing that his fastball velocity has fully recovered.
Command remains the biggest hurdle, but if he consistently throws strikes, he could earn consideration for a late-season promotion to St. Louis.
Ixan Henderson
Another pitcher returning from injury is Ixan Henderson.
He has steadily increased his workload during rehabilitation outings and is expected to continue building innings over the final weeks. Henderson becomes Rule 5 Draft eligible this offseason, making these remaining appearances especially important as the organization evaluates whether to protect him on the 40-man roster.
Yairo Padilla Is Quietly Putting Together an Impressive Season
One of the organization’s youngest position players, Yairo Padilla, has played only a limited number of games after missing time with a shoulder injury.
Despite the small sample, the early offensive production has been outstanding.
There are still developmental areas to address. Padilla currently hits too many ground balls and doesn’t consistently elevate the baseball, limiting some of his power potential.
However, nearly every other aspect of his offensive profile has been extremely encouraging.
Even at just 19 years old, Padilla has produced exit velocities approaching major league averages while consistently making contact on pitches inside the strike zone. Those underlying numbers suggest his offensive ceiling remains very high.
Should he maintain this production through the remainder of the season, national prospect evaluators may begin placing him among baseball’s more intriguing young hitters.
Deniel Ortiz Showing Promising Development
Another hitter quietly making progress is Deniel Ortiz, currently playing at Double-A Springfield.
Ortiz has received less attention than teammates such as Rainiel Rodriguez, Won-Bin Cho, and Jesus Baez, all of whom have generated headlines with their offensive performances. Nevertheless, Ortiz continues showing encouraging improvements.
His plate discipline remains one of his greatest strengths. He consistently avoids chasing pitches outside the strike zone, demonstrating a mature offensive approach.
Perhaps most importantly, his contact rate has improved considerably despite moving to a higher level of competition.
Although his home-run production hasn’t fully returned following a hand injury, there is little concern regarding his raw power. Previous exit velocity readings demonstrate he possesses more than enough strength to produce extra-base hits consistently.
If the improved contact skills continue while the power returns, Ortiz could emerge as one of the Cardinals’ most complete offensive prospects behind only Rainiel Rodriguez.
Pitchers Looking to Finish Strong
Both Tanner Franklin and Yoiker Fajardo have enjoyed outstanding seasons with High-A Peoria.
Their performances have raised the possibility of promotions to Double-A Springfield before the season concludes.
Franklin has already surpassed his previous career high in innings pitched, meaning workload management may influence the Cardinals’ decision regarding his next assignment.
Fajardo has been equally impressive, recently surpassing last season’s workload while dominating opposing hitters. Over his latest stretch, he has produced exceptional strikeout numbers and continues to establish himself as one of the organization’s most intriguing young arms.
If promoted, he would become one of the youngest pitchers to appear at the Double-A level this season.
Sebastian Dos Santos Continues His Rise
Among all the prospects discussed, few have generated as much excitement this year as Sebastian Dos Santos.
The switch-hitting shortstop dominated rookie-level competition earlier in the season, earning a promotion to Low-A Palm Beach after displaying surprising power for an 18-year-old.
Rather than struggling after the jump, Dos Santos has continued holding his own against older competition.
His offensive profile is especially intriguing because it combines several desirable traits. He demonstrates above-average discipline, consistently makes contact, and already produces impressive exit velocities despite his youth.
Unlike some young hitters who pound the ball into the ground, Dos Santos frequently drives balls in the air, allowing his natural power to play during games.
Those well-rounded offensive skills make him one of the organization’s most promising teenage talents.
Looking Ahead
As the final weeks of the 2026 minor league season unfold, several Cardinals prospects have significant opportunities ahead. Players such as Quinn Mathews, Brandon Clarke, Cooper Hjerpe, Yairo Padilla, Deniel Ortiz, Yoiker Fajardo, and Sebastian Dos Santos all have realistic chances to elevate their stock before the offseason begins.
Among that group, Dos Santos may possess the highest long-term upside. While comparisons to some of the organization’s recent breakout stars may be premature, his combination of age, power potential, disciplined approach, and contact ability gives him an exceptionally high ceiling.
If he finishes the year on another hot streak, he could enter 2027 as one of the Cardinals’ premier prospects and a player attracting attention throughout baseball. With only a handful of weeks remaining, the organization has plenty of reasons to closely monitor these rising talents as they continue shaping the future of the franchise.
