Jacksonville State delivered one of the most dominant performances in Conference USA Baseball Tournament history on Sunday afternoon, overpowering Liberty 10-0 in seven innings to secure the program’s first-ever CUSA tournament championship. The victory marked a historic milestone for the Gamecocks, who capped off an outstanding season with a complete team effort on both offense and defense.
From the opening inning, Jacksonville State looked focused and determined to leave no doubt about who deserved the title. The Gamecocks combined explosive hitting, aggressive base running, and elite pitching to overwhelm Liberty in every phase of the game. By the end of the afternoon, Jacksonville State had totaled 12 hits, blasted four home runs, and held Liberty scoreless while allowing only three hits.
Head coach Steve Bieser praised the toughness and unity his team displayed throughout the tournament run. According to Bieser, the group’s chemistry and belief in one another helped carry them through several difficult moments during the week and ultimately fueled the championship performance.
The offensive attack was led by tournament MVP Sam Richardson, who turned in a spectacular showing in the title game. Richardson crushed two home runs and drove in three runs, continuing the momentum he built throughout the tournament. His ability to deliver in big moments became one of the defining stories of Jacksonville State’s championship run.
Richardson got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning when he launched a towering solo home run to straightaway center field. The blast traveled an estimated 428 feet and immediately energized the Jacksonville State dugout and fans in attendance. The homer gave the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead and set the tone for what would become an offensive explosion.
The Gamecocks continued to apply pressure in the third inning. Caleb Johnson stepped to the plate and crushed his ninth home run of the season, extending Jacksonville State’s lead while also reaching the impressive milestone of 50 RBIs for the year. Johnson’s consistency throughout the season has made him one of the team’s most reliable hitters, and he once again delivered on the biggest stage.
Jacksonville State was far from finished in the inning. Grayson Ashe followed with a double to left field, placing another runner in scoring position. Shortly afterward, Brady Thomas blasted a two-run home run to right field, increasing the lead to 5-0 and putting Liberty in an early hole. The Gamecocks’ ability to string together extra-base hits left Liberty struggling to slow the momentum.
Johnson ended the championship game with an impressive 3-for-4 performance at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in two more. Ashe also recorded two hits and played a key role in several scoring opportunities. Jacksonville State’s lineup consistently produced quality at-bats throughout the game, making it nearly impossible for Liberty’s pitching staff to settle into a rhythm.
While the offense received much of the attention, Jacksonville State’s pitching staff was equally dominant. The Gamecocks used three pitchers to combine for a shutout performance, striking out seven Liberty batters and never allowing the Flames to establish offensive momentum.
Steven Cash got the start for Jacksonville State and delivered a gritty outing despite pitching on short rest. Cash worked 3.2 innings, allowing only one hit while striking out two batters. He also showed tremendous toughness by battling through difficult situations and limiting Liberty’s opportunities early in the game.
Coach Bieser later explained that Cash strongly wanted the ball despite having limited rest following his earlier appearance in the tournament. The coaching staff initially planned for a shorter outing, but Cash’s competitiveness and determination helped provide a strong start for the Gamecocks.
One of the game’s biggest moments came in the fourth inning when Jud Files entered in relief with runners on base and Liberty threatening to cut into the lead. The pressure intensified after the bases became loaded, but Files responded in dominant fashion by recording a huge strikeout to end the inning and preserve Jacksonville State’s shutout.
That moment completely shifted any remaining momentum away from Liberty. Files continued to pitch effectively over the next several innings, allowing only two hits while striking out four batters in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief work. His composure in critical situations proved essential to Jacksonville State maintaining complete control of the championship game.
The Gamecocks added even more insurance runs in the fifth inning through a combination of smart situational baseball and timely hitting. Jaxon Pate opened the inning with a single up the middle before Trey King executed a perfectly placed squeeze bunt to drive him home. The aggressive play highlighted Jacksonville State’s balanced offensive approach throughout the tournament.
Moments later, Johnson doubled again and eventually scored when Ashe delivered an RBI single to left field. Cooper Blauser followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home another run and stretched the lead to 8-0. By that point, Jacksonville State had completely taken over the contest, leaving Liberty with little chance of mounting a comeback.
Pate also delivered a strong performance at the top of the lineup, finishing 2-for-4 while consistently creating scoring opportunities for the hitters behind him. His energy and ability to get on base helped Jacksonville State maintain offensive pressure throughout the afternoon.
In the seventh inning, Jackson Sleeper came on in relief to close out the championship victory. Although Liberty managed to load the bases, Sleeper stayed calm and responded with a strikeout before inducing a game-ending flyout. His ability to escape the jam preserved the shutout and officially secured Jacksonville State’s historic title.
The final moment fittingly belonged to Richardson, who ended the game in dramatic fashion with another two-run homer to center field. The blast enforced the run-rule victory and sparked an emotional celebration as Jacksonville State players rushed onto the field to celebrate the first Conference USA tournament title in program history.
Several Gamecocks were recognized for their outstanding performances during the tournament. Richardson, Ashe, Blauser, King, and Cash were all named to the all-tournament team after playing major roles throughout the week.
The championship victory also earned Jacksonville State the automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, adding another achievement to an already memorable season. The Gamecocks now await their regional placement and opponent selections as they prepare for the next stage of postseason competition.
For Jacksonville State, the tournament title represented more than just another trophy. It showcased the growth of the program, the depth of the roster, and the resilience the team demonstrated all season long. With strong pitching, explosive offense, and tremendous team chemistry, the Gamecocks proved they are capable of competing with anyone in the country as they now turn their attention toward the NCAA Tournament.
