The Buffalo Bills have made a concerted effort this offseason to upgrade their defense, particularly focusing on improving athleticism and versatility in the secondary. Their approach seems influenced by shortcomings exposed in their final game of the previous season. With an emphasis on players who can operate well in zone coverage while also keeping up with elite-level athletes, the team has added several promising prospects, including fifth-round draft pick Jordan Hancock.
Jordan Hancock, selected 170th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, brings both versatility and athleticism to the defensive backfield. Standing 6’1″ and weighing 195 pounds, he played a key role in Ohio State’s National Championship season. In 2024, Hancock recorded 48 tackles, nine pass breakups, one interception, half a sack, and two forced fumbles across 16 games. He stood out in the playoffs and earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors. Although he didn’t participate in the NFL Combine drills, he impressed scouts at his Pro Day with a 4.46-second 40-yard dash, a 41.5-inch vertical, and a 10’6″ broad jump.
Hancock’s role in Buffalo is expected to be similar to that of Cam Lewis—a hybrid slot corner and safety. His experience playing both safety and cornerback gives the coaching staff flexibility when crafting defensive packages. The Bills’ current roster includes a deep pool of defensive backs, making competition fierce. Still, Hancock’s athletic edge may help him stand out among players like Ja’Marcus Ingram, Brandon Codrington, and Dorian Strong.
Making the final roster won’t be easy. Assuming the Bills keep nine defensive backs, seven spots seem relatively secure, leaving Hancock in a tight battle for one of the final two or three places. His path likely depends on whether he can show immediate value on special teams and develop quickly on defense. Veterans like Lewis and fringe players like Tre’Davious White and Dane Jackson are all in the mix, making the evaluation process a challenge for the coaching staff.
As of now, Hancock is healthy and fully participating in offseason activities. His athletic upside and positional flexibility make him an intriguing option for Buffalo’s evolving secondary. While he has a realistic shot at making the 53-man roster, there’s also a possibility the team could temporarily sideline him with an injury designation to preserve his development. Either way, Hancock represents the type of dynamic defender the Bills hope can elevate their defense moving forward.
