Harper Lifts Phillies Past Cardinals, Snapping St. Louis’ 9-Game Win Streak
Bryce Harper delivered a key two-out RBI single in the seventh inning to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.
Harper reached base three times, but it was his bloop single off reliever Steven Matz that completed a late rally. The Phillies had just three hits entering the seventh, but strung together four singles to plate two runs. Bryson Stott tied the game with an infield hit, and Harper followed two batters later with what proved to be the game-winner.
Jesus Luzardo improved to 4-0 on the season, matching his season high with seven innings pitched. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out six. Jordan Romano closed out the game, striking out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.
Jordan Walker drove in the only run for St. Louis, ending their nine-game winning streak. Cardinals starter Erick Fedde threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings.
Notable Moment:
A key call went in Philadelphia’s favor when Rafael Marchan was ruled safe after a video review showed that Brendan Donovan had only tagged Marchan’s helmet, not his body, during a close play at second base. Marchan later scored the go-ahead run on Harper’s hit.
Stat of the Game:
Kyle Schwarber’s 47-game on-base streak, the longest in MLB this season and fourth-longest in Phillies history, ended after an 0-for-4 performance.
Looking Ahead:
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cardinals will start Sonny Gray (4-1, 3.50 ERA), while the Phillies counter with Aaron Nola (1-6, 4.89 ERA).
