The Buffalo Bills enter Week 5 in an enviable position as one of the few undefeated teams left in the NFL with a 4-0 record. Their most recent victory came in convincing fashion, defeating the New Orleans Saints 31-19. While many expected Buffalo to dominate, it was still important that they handled business in a game that could have easily become a trap.
Now, the Bills turn their attention to a Sunday night showdown on October 5 against the New England Patriots. Though the Patriots are no longer the powerhouse they once were, any matchup with New England carries weight. Quarterback Josh Allen, last season’s league MVP, has three strong reasons to enter the game with confidence, having received widespread recognition for his play this season.
Allen’s performance has been highlighted across multiple quarterback rankings heading into Week 5. NFL.com’s Nick Shook placed him among the league’s best after his efficient outing against the Saints, where he completed 72.7 percent of his passes while also benefitting from James Cook’s third straight 100-yard rushing performance. CBS Sports and USA Today also ranked Allen at the very top of their quarterback lists, giving him a clean sweep across three major outlets.
Analysts have praised Allen for picking up right where he left off after last year’s MVP campaign. Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports pointed out that Buffalo’s undefeated start is largely due to Allen’s all-around excellence, with his 10 total touchdowns ranking near the top among quarterbacks. USA Today’s Jack McKessy added that, aside from one interception against New Orleans, Allen’s dual-threat ability continues to make him nearly unstoppable.
Not all the coverage has been glowing, as Fox Sports suggested Allen hasn’t always looked like the reigning MVP. However, the play of James Cook — who already has 401 rushing yards and a league-leading five rushing touchdowns — has eased the pressure on Allen. Still, with Buffalo thriving and their star quarterback ranked No. 1 across the board, Allen has every reason to feel confident as the Bills prepare for the Patriots.
