It took the Buffalo Bills four games to find a role for veteran wide receiver Curtis Samuel this season, but a recent roster move may secure his spot in the lineup — and keep him off the trade block.
Samuel was a healthy scratch for the first three games before being activated for Sunday’s win over the New Orleans Saints. He stepped in as the team’s kick returner after Brandon Codrington was benched, a shift that could give Samuel a more consistent role moving forward.
Bills Bring Curtis Samuel Back
Samuel joined Buffalo in the 2024 offseason on a three-year, $24 million deal, expected to be one of the top receivers. However, his first season fell short of expectations with just 31 catches for 253 yards and one touchdown. This year began with more challenges, as he was inactive through the first three weeks and considered a possible trade candidate.
Head coach Sean McDermott explained that Codrington was benched so the team could evaluate other options at returner. While Samuel’s impact was limited in his first game back, his ability to contribute both as a returner and on offense makes him more valuable than Codrington, who rarely plays at his natural cornerback position.
Curtis Samuel Seen as Trade Target
Before Week 4, Samuel’s future in Buffalo looked uncertain. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler listed him among potential trade targets, pointing out his $7.4 million salary and lack of playing time. Some insiders suggested he could bring back a Day 3 draft pick while also helping the Bills clear cap space.
Ryan Talbot of Syracuse.com projected that Buffalo might pair Samuel with a future pick in exchange for a late-round selection, more to move his contract than to secure strong trade value. However, with the team aiming for a Super Bowl run, the Bills may prefer to keep their wide receiver depth intact.
For now, Samuel’s versatility could keep him active on gamedays and out of trade discussions.
