Canadiens Could Win Big in Proposed Kadri-Laine Trade
The Montreal Canadiens are exploring roster upgrades this offseason, especially after recent injury concerns surrounding center Kirby Dach. A proposed one-for-one trade would send Nazem Kadri from the Calgary Flames to Montreal, in exchange for Patrik Laine.
Trade Proposal:
Canadiens Receive: Nazem Kadri (4 years remaining, $7M/year)
Flames Receive: Patrik Laine (1 year remaining, $8.7M)
This deal gives Montreal a veteran center with a Stanley Cup on his resume and strong recent production (35 goals, 67 points in 2024–25). Meanwhile, Calgary gains a younger, high-upside winger in Laine who scored 20 goals in 52 games last season. If Laine fits well, Calgary could look to extend him.
The trade would also free up $1.7 million in salary cap space for the Canadiens, offering some relief in their current cap situation.
Health Concerns Increase Need for a Center
Recent reports indicate that Dach is unlikely to be ready for training camp due to ongoing recovery from a knee injury. He has been seen working out, but the exercises are reportedly focused on rehab, not strength-building. This adds urgency for the Canadiens to find a capable second-line center.
Kadri Open to Montreal Move
Kadri, a 15-year NHL veteran, has a no-move clause but is reportedly open to waiving it for a trade to one of two Canadian Eastern Conference teams: Montreal or Toronto. However, Toronto’s chances may be slim due to past trade difficulties with Calgary.
Kadri remains under contract for four more seasons and could offer valuable leadership and playoff experience as Montreal’s younger core continues to develop.
