After the Yankees parted ways with Gleyber Torres following the 2024 season, the second baseman has revived his career with an impressive All-Star campaign for the Detroit Tigers. On Tuesday, Torres once again played under his former manager, Aaron Boone, while representing the American League.
“He’s had an incredible season for a team that currently holds the best record in the American League, the Detroit Tigers,” Boone said this week, according to the New York Post. “He’s really set the tone for them at the top of the lineup, getting on base at a great rate.”
Torres signed a one-year, $15 million contract with Detroit, ending his seven years with New York. So far this season, he’s batting .281 with a .812 OPS, nine home runs, and 45 RBIs over 359 plate appearances.
Now 28, Torres debuted in the majors in 2018 and spent all seven seasons as a Yankee. He broke out in 2019 with 38 home runs over 144 games but posted more modest numbers afterward, hitting .261/.332/.411 over the next five seasons.
He started 2024 as the Yankees’ leadoff hitter but was moved down in the order in favor of Anthony Volpe. He finished last season hitting .257 with a .709 OPS, 15 home runs, and 63 RBIs in 154 games — stats that were held back by a rough start. However, from mid-August on, after reclaiming the leadoff spot, he hit .313 with a .386 OBP and .454 slugging percentage to close out his Yankees tenure strongly.
