Kansas Jayhawks relief pitcher Alex Breckheimer is moving on to the next level after hearing his name called in the 2025 MLB Draft. The St. Louis Cardinals picked Breckheimer in the 16th round, using the 480th overall selection to add him to their organization.
Breckheimer made an impact in his lone season at Kansas, where he was a steady presence in the bullpen. He appeared in numerous key situations for the Jayhawks and proved to be one of their most reliable arms when the game was on the line.
He finished the 2025 season with an impressive 5-0 record. Over 48 innings pitched, he recorded a 3.56 earned run average and notched seven saves. His performance helped Kansas stay competitive throughout the year.
The selection is a big step forward for Breckheimer, who now has the opportunity to work his way through the Cardinals’ minor league system. If he continues to perform at a high level, he could eventually earn a spot on the major league roster.
In addition to Breckheimer, local talent Mason McConnaghey, a graduate of Seaman High School, was also drafted. McConnaghey is headed to the Texas Rangers’ organization, giving the region more reasons to follow this year’s draft class closely.
