As the NBA Summer League prepares to begin, Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is still under federal investigation in a wide-ranging gambling probe involving multiple professional athletes. Reports first emerged just before the start of free agency, revealing that Beasley is being scrutinized as part of a multi-year federal inquiry.
Beasley, who was the Pistons’ third-leading scorer during the playoffs, became an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Prior to the investigation becoming public, he had been in advanced discussions with Detroit on a potential three-year, $42 million contract.
This makes Beasley the third NBA player currently under federal investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. He joined the Pistons last year on a one-year, $6 million deal. His attorney, Steve Haney, emphasized that Beasley has not been charged with any crime and deserves the presumption of innocence, stating that many under investigation are never charged.
Jontay Porter’s Case Sets Precedent
The investigation follows the high-profile case of former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, who pleaded guilty last July to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Porter admitted to intentionally altering his in-game performance for betting purposes, including faking injuries. His actions enabled a gambling syndicate to profit significantly from bets placed on his game statistics. As a result, Porter received a lifetime ban from the NBA.
Federal prosecutors allege that the syndicate earned $1.1 million from a same-game parlay involving Porter. He is currently facing a potential prison sentence of 41 to 51 months, down from a maximum of 20 years, and is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called match-fixing a severe breach of the league’s integrity. In response to Porter’s case, some sportsbooks have since limited betting markets on less prominent players.
Terry Rozier Also Under Scrutiny
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was also investigated for possible suspicious betting activity tied to a March 2023 game during his time with the Charlotte Hornets. Rozier exited the game early due to a reported foot issue. Despite the investigation, he has not been charged or suspended and is entering the final year of his contract.
Broader Gambling Scheme Involving Multiple Individuals
Shane Hennen, a professional poker player and sports bettor, was arrested in connection with the Porter betting scheme. Authorities allege he attempted to flee the country and was in possession of multiple phones and cash. Court documents include a message allegedly from Porter that outlined plans to fake an injury, contributing to suspicious betting activity.
Prosecutors believe the scheme involved proxies and bettors across the country and cite substantial evidence including phone and financial records. Hennen is facing a deadline of July 22 to reach a plea deal with the government.
Possible Link to College Basketball
Federal investigators are also examining potential links between the NBA betting ring and a college basketball gambling investigation. Several college games, particularly involving Temple University, showed irregular betting patterns, prompting further scrutiny. Former Temple guard Hysier Miller has been interviewed by NCAA officials, though no formal charges have been filed against college athletes so far.
Beasley’s Financial and Legal Issues
In addition to the federal investigation, Beasley faces several civil lawsuits. According to a recent report, he owes roughly $8 million in unpaid debts, including rent, dental bills, and a payment to a Milwaukee barbershop.
He also faces a $2.5 million lawsuit from Hazan Sports Management, which claims Beasley breached a marketing agreement by terminating their contract after receiving a $650,000 advance on future endorsement deals.
NBA Response
The NBA has acknowledged the investigation involving Beasley and is cooperating with federal authorities. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment. Commissioner Adam Silver is expected to address broader league matters in an upcoming press conference.
The Detroit Pistons are set to open their Summer League schedule against the New York Knicks on July 11.
