Michael Volpe, father of New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, was involved in a fiery altercation with a Mets fan during a recent Subway Series game. The confrontation occurred during the Yankees’ 6-4 win over the Mets and was captured on video by a bystander. The clip, which was shared on social media, shows Michael passionately defending his son against what appeared to be heckling from a nearby fan.
In the video, Michael can be heard yelling “Let’s go!” toward an off-camera Mets supporter. Though it’s unclear what the fan said to provoke the reaction, Michael responded with strong language, repeatedly accusing the individual of insulting his son. His wife, Isabelle, could be seen trying to de-escalate the situation and calm him down.
One fan nearby could be heard commenting, “Your son’s the best,” though it’s uncertain if the remark was supportive or sarcastic. The tension was ultimately broken when “God Bless America” began playing over the stadium speakers, prompting fans to rise and bringing the confrontation to an abrupt halt.
Anthony Volpe, 24, has faced criticism for his performance this season. In the Subway Series alone, he went just 1-for-11. His current batting average sits at .219 with a .296 on-base percentage and a .398 slugging percentage. He’s committed 11 errors, placing him among the top three MLB shortstops in that category. Volpe also leads the league in runners left on base with 176.
Despite these struggles, Volpe has still managed to produce 10 home runs and 48 RBIs in 89 games. There remains hope among fans — and clearly from his family — that he’ll regain his form as the season progresses.
