The Pittsburgh Steelers have made major moves heading into the 2025 season, including signing quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year, $13.65 million deal and trading for wide receiver DK Metcalf. Despite never having a losing season under head coach Mike Tomlin, the team’s recent postseason struggles are raising questions about his future.
NFL insider Mike Florio, appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, hinted that Tomlin’s job may be at risk if the Steelers fail to break their nine-year playoff win drought.
“It feels like desperation,” Florio said. “This is the longest the franchise has gone without a postseason win since their first back in 1972. If they come up short again, I think anything could happen in 2026.”
The pressure has only intensified as the Steelers made several aggressive offseason changes. In addition to acquiring Rodgers and Metcalf, they also traded away wide receiver George Pickens, reportedly to eliminate locker room distractions and create a more cohesive team environment. These moves, according to Florio, reflect a win-now mindset that could determine the direction of the franchise moving forward.
Mike Tomlin
With a competitive AFC North and high expectations, Pittsburgh faces a challenging path in the upcoming season. The team opens the 2025 campaign with a Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets, and Tomlin’s performance will be under close watch.
If the Steelers can’t finally notch a postseason win, Florio suggests that even a coach with Tomlin’s track record may find himself on the hot seat.
