The Buffalo Bills added veteran quarterback Mike White last season to provide depth behind starter Josh Allen. However, White may face a tough battle this summer to secure a spot on the active roster, competing directly with Mitch Trubisky. An insider predicts the Bills will continue their recent trend of carrying only two quarterbacks, which could leave White off the roster.
In recent years, the Bills have avoided quarterback competitions in training camp, typically selecting a clear backup to Allen and a third quarterback for the practice squad. But with White’s arrival, there is real competition this year between him and Trubisky for the backup role.
Analyst Joe Buscaglia noted that this time, the backup spot is not predetermined. He believes Trubisky has an advantage due to his partially guaranteed contract and his mobility, which better complements Allen’s playing style. Nonetheless, Buscaglia emphasizes that the competition remains wide open.
White, with seven career starts and experience with the Jets and Dolphins, could challenge Trubisky. Over his career, White has completed 61.4% of his passes for 2,247 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He also appeared briefly in the Bills’ last game of the previous season.
The Bills expect to rely heavily on their durable MVP quarterback Josh Allen, who has played every game since his rookie year despite dealing with injuries. Allen recently defended the use of the “tush push” short-yardage play after an NFL proposal considered banning it, praising its effectiveness and popularity in Buffalo’s offense.
