The New York Mets could be heading toward another major change in the dugout as the organization prepares for an important offseason. After a disappointing 2026 campaign, the club will have several difficult decisions to make, and one of the biggest will be determining who should become its next full-time manager.
The Mets already made a significant move during the season when they dismissed Carlos Mendoza. With the team struggling to find consistency and results continuing to deteriorate, the organization ultimately decided that a change in leadership was necessary.
Andy Green was subsequently named interim manager for the remainder of the season, giving the Mets an opportunity to evaluate their roster and coaching structure while they consider their long-term direction.
Mendoza’s departure came during an especially difficult stretch for New York. The Mets had suffered through a six-game losing streak and were coming off a four-game sweep by the Chicago Cubs. At the time, the club had fallen to 34-47 and was sitting 13 games below .500, marking one of the lowest points of its season.
For Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, the decision was not based on one particular game or incident. Instead, it reflected the team’s overall inability to reverse its fortunes.
Stearns explained that the organization had strongly supported Mendoza and genuinely believed he could help guide the club back in the right direction. However, as the season progressed, the situation failed to improve and, in certain areas, became even worse.
That ultimately convinced the Mets that continuing with the same approach was no longer the right decision.
Now, the organization has to determine who can provide the leadership needed to move the franchise forward.
One intriguing name has emerged as a potential candidate: Albert Pujols.
The legendary former first baseman could be an unconventional choice, but his name is worth considering because of the experience, leadership and credibility he accumulated during one of the greatest playing careers in baseball history.
Pujols was reportedly part of the managerial conversation during the previous offseason. Although he did not land a managerial position at that time, he remains available and could potentially receive another opportunity.
According to speculation cited by Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy, Pujols could be a candidate for the Mets job if the position becomes available on a permanent basis.
McAvoy pointed out that Pujols was previously linked to the Los Angeles Angels’ managerial opening. While that opportunity ultimately did not materialize, Pujols’ interest in managing has reportedly remained.
There has also been speculation that Pujols would be interested in the Mets position should it open up. If that is indeed the case, New York could have an intriguing option available when it begins its search.
Of course, hiring Pujols would come with considerable uncertainty.
The biggest concern is obvious: he has never managed a Major League Baseball team.
Managing a big-league club requires far more than an impressive playing résumé. A manager must handle a clubhouse, communicate effectively with players, work closely with coaches and front-office executives, make strategic decisions during games and maintain control during difficult stretches.
Pujols would have to learn all of those responsibilities on the job.
That lack of managerial experience could make the Mets hesitant to take such a significant gamble, especially after the organization has already endured a disappointing season.
However, Pujols brings something few potential candidates can match: an extraordinary understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest level of professional baseball.
During his playing career, Pujols established himself as one of the most accomplished hitters of his generation. He won two World Series championships and earned 11 All-Star selections, building a résumé that gives him instant credibility inside a professional clubhouse.
His career also exposed him to different organizational environments, championship expectations and the pressures that come with being one of baseball’s biggest stars.
Those experiences could prove valuable if he eventually decides to transition into management.
Pujols’ leadership qualities could also make him an appealing candidate. A manager does not necessarily have to be the most experienced former coach to succeed. Communication, preparation, confidence and the ability to earn the trust of players can be equally important.
Pujols spent years playing alongside elite athletes and dealing with the enormous expectations placed on franchise stars. That perspective could help him understand the challenges faced by players on a team such as the Mets.
Still, there is a major difference between being a respected veteran player and running a Major League clubhouse.
The Mets would therefore have to decide whether Pujols’ leadership and baseball knowledge outweigh the risks associated with his lack of managerial experience.
The club’s next decision will be particularly important because New York cannot afford to make another move without carefully considering the long-term consequences.
The Mets will likely evaluate multiple candidates before making a final decision. They could choose an experienced manager who has already handled the responsibilities of running a major-league club, or they could pursue a less conventional candidate such as Pujols.
