The Seattle Mariners have made another move to bolster their pitching depth, signing veteran right-handed reliever Scott Effross to a minor league contract. The 32-year-old pitcher is joining Seattle’s organization at Triple-A Tacoma, where he will have an opportunity to work his way back toward the major leagues.
The signing gives the Mariners another experienced arm to evaluate as they navigate the second half of the 2026 season. While Effross will not immediately join Seattle’s major league bullpen, his previous experience at the highest level could make him an intriguing option if the Mariners need additional help in the coming weeks.
Effross entered the 2026 campaign hoping to revive his MLB career after dealing with several significant injuries in recent seasons. He initially signed a minor league agreement with the Detroit Tigers and attended their spring training camp as a non-roster invitee. Although he did not make Detroit’s Opening Day roster, he remained with the organization and spent the season pitching for Triple-A Toledo.
During his time with Toledo, Effross appeared in 27 games and logged 36 1/3 innings. His results were mixed, as he finished the stint with a 4.46 earned-run average. He struck out 16% of the hitters he faced while generating ground balls at a 42% rate.
Those numbers may not immediately stand out, but Seattle is taking a chance on a pitcher with previous major league success and an extensive track record of battling back from injuries. Effross was released by the Tigers last week, allowing him to explore other opportunities before ultimately landing with the Mariners.
For Seattle, the move is primarily about adding depth. The organization can evaluate Effross at Tacoma without having to immediately commit a major league roster spot to him. If he performs well, however, he could eventually become a candidate for a promotion.
Effross has appeared in 88 major league games since making his MLB debut in 2021. His most memorable stretch came early in his career with the Chicago Cubs. As a rookie in 2022, he emerged as a useful bullpen piece and attracted enough attention to become a trade-deadline target.
The New York Yankees acquired Effross from the Cubs during the 2022 trade deadline. In exchange, Chicago received then-prospect Hayden Wesneski. At the time, the Yankees viewed Effross as a valuable addition to their bullpen, but his career soon took a difficult turn.
Effross underwent Tommy John surgery, forcing him to miss the entire 2023 season. The procedure represented another major obstacle in a career that had already begun to attract attention because of his effectiveness as a reliever.
His injury problems did not end there. During the 2023-24 offseason, Effross also underwent back surgery. Later, a left hamstring strain sidelined him for the opening portion of the following season, keeping him unavailable for roughly the first six weeks.
Despite those setbacks, Effross eventually returned to the Yankees’ bullpen and managed to make 10 2/3 major league innings in an inconsistent, up-and-down role. However, New York ultimately decided not to retain him, non-tendering the right-hander and allowing him to enter the next stage of his career elsewhere.
Now, Seattle represents another opportunity for Effross to prove that he still has something left to offer at the major league level.
The timing of the signing is also noteworthy for the Mariners. Seattle’s bullpen has experienced some struggles recently, making additional pitching depth increasingly important. The unit currently ranks 11th in MLB in ERA and 13th in strikeout rate, while its performance over the past month has been particularly concerning.
During that stretch, the Mariners’ bullpen has posted a 5.02 ERA and surrendered an increased number of home runs. Those struggles have created an opening for pitchers in the organization to compete for opportunities, particularly in the middle-relief portion of the bullpen.
Seattle has also suffered an injury setback involving Cole Wilcox, who recently landed on the injured list with an oblique strain. His absence creates another potential opening and could increase the Mariners’ need for reliable depth.
Effross therefore arrives at an interesting moment. He is not guaranteed a major league opportunity, but he could find himself in the conversation if he can rediscover his previous form at Triple-A.
The Mariners could ultimately have two or three middle-relief positions available for competition, giving Effross a realistic path toward another MLB opportunity. His first task will be to demonstrate that his arm is healthy and that he can consistently get major league hitters out.
His experience could work in his favor. Unlike a young prospect making his first attempt to reach the majors, Effross has already pitched at the highest level and understands the demands of working out of a major league bullpen. He has also experienced the pressure of pitching for a prominent organization like the Yankees.
The challenge now is translating that experience into results with Seattle.
For the Mariners, the signing carries relatively little risk because Effross is joining on a minor league contract. Seattle can monitor his performance at Tacoma and determine whether he deserves a promotion without immediately sacrificing a spot on the major league roster.
If he performs well, the Mariners could have an experienced relief option waiting in the wings. If he struggles, the organization can simply continue exploring other options within its pitching system.
For Effross, meanwhile, the opportunity could be much more significant. After multiple surgeries and setbacks interrupted the promising beginning of his career, another major league comeback would represent an important milestone.
His path back to MLB will begin in Tacoma, but the Mariners’ current bullpen situation means an opportunity in Seattle may not be far away if he can establish himself quickly.
The Mariners are attempting to remain competitive, and adding pitching depth is particularly important as the season progresses. Injuries and inconsistent bullpen performances can quickly expose weaknesses on a contender, making experienced arms valuable even when they begin the season in the minor leagues.
Effross now has another chance to demonstrate that he can contribute.
Whether he ultimately makes it back to Seattle’s major league roster remains uncertain, but the opportunity is there. The Mariners have given the former Yankees reliever a chance to restart his career, and his performance at Triple-A Tacoma will determine how quickly that opportunity develops.
For now, Seattle has added another experienced pitcher to its organizational depth chart. With the bullpen searching for consistency and injuries creating additional uncertainty, Effross could potentially turn what appears to be a minor league signing into a meaningful role with the Mariners before the 2026 season concludes.
