The St. Louis Cardinals have added another intriguing piece to their organization, claiming former New York Yankees outfield prospect Everson Pereira off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.
The move, announced Thursday, August 6, gives the Cardinals an opportunity to take a closer look at a player who once carried significant expectations within the Yankees’ farm system. Pereira has yet to establish himself as a consistent Major League hitter, but his previous prospect status and flashes of power make him an interesting addition for St. Louis.
Pereira, 25, spent the 2026 season with the White Sox and appeared in 27 games before Chicago designated him for assignment. During that stretch, he hit .225 with a .284 on-base percentage and a .438 slugging percentage. He recorded four home runs, 11 RBIs and posted a .722 OPS.
Those numbers are not eye-catching on their own, but the Cardinals are clearly betting on the possibility that Pereira can rediscover some of the potential that made him one of the more notable prospects in the Yankees’ system.
Cardinals Give Pereira Another Opportunity
Pereira’s arrival in St. Louis represents another opportunity for a player whose professional career has taken several turns in recent seasons.
The outfielder originally built his reputation as a highly regarded prospect with the Yankees. At one point, he was ranked as New York’s No. 6 prospect in 2023, placing him ahead of pitchers such as Will Warren and Luis Gil on the organization’s prospect list.
That ranking reflected the talent scouts believed Pereira possessed. However, translating that potential into consistent production at the Major League level has proved considerably more difficult.
Since reaching the majors for the first time in 2023, Pereira has moved between the big leagues and Triple-A. He has played for the Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and White Sox, giving him experience with multiple organizations while still searching for the breakthrough season that could establish him as a dependable MLB contributor.
Across his Major League career, Pereira has appeared in 77 games and accumulated 264 plate appearances. His overall numbers have been modest, with a .172 batting average, .246 on-base percentage and .290 slugging percentage. He has hit six home runs and produced a .536 OPS.
Still, the Cardinals appear willing to overlook those struggles and see whether a change of scenery can unlock something more from the talented outfielder.
A Complicated Path Since Leaving New York
Pereira’s journey has been anything but straightforward.
The Yankees once viewed him as an important part of their future, but his difficulty maintaining offensive consistency ultimately led to his departure from the organization. He later joined the Rays before eventually landing with Chicago.
The White Sox acquired Pereira from Tampa Bay in November 2025 in a deal that sent pitchers Steven Wilson and Yoendrys Gómez to the Rays. The transaction gave Chicago an opportunity to work with an outfielder who still had considerable upside despite his limited MLB success.
His 2026 season, however, was interrupted by injuries. Pereira spent time on the injured list because of a right pectoral strain and later suffered a concussion after making a leaping catch. He eventually returned to action, including a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Charlotte, before rejoining the White Sox.
Chicago ultimately designated him for assignment on August 3, opening the door for another organization to claim him.
That organization turned out to be St. Louis.
The Cardinals Will Have to Make a Roster Decision
One of the most important details surrounding the move is Pereira’s roster status.
Because he is out of minor-league options, the Cardinals cannot simply send him to the minors whenever they choose. When Pereira reports to St. Louis, the team will have to find a place for him on its active roster.
That creates an interesting situation for the Cardinals.
The organization has acquired a player with legitimate prospect pedigree, but it will need to determine whether his potential is worth using an active roster spot. The decision could come quickly because the club does not have the flexibility of simply optioning him to Triple-A.
For Pereira, meanwhile, the situation creates an immediate opportunity.
Rather than continuing to wait for another chance, he will have to show the Cardinals that he can contribute at the Major League level. Every at-bat could become important as he attempts to convince the organization that his previous prospect reputation was not misplaced.
Why the Cardinals Could Be Interested
At first glance, Pereira’s career numbers might not suggest an obvious addition. His .172 career batting average and .536 OPS show just how difficult his transition to Major League pitching has been.
However, organizations often take chances on former highly ranked prospects because development is rarely linear.
Pereira’s prospect history indicates that there was once considerable belief in his offensive ability. The Cardinals may believe that a different environment, coaching staff or approach could help him make better use of the tools that initially attracted scouts.
His 2026 numbers with Chicago also offer at least one reason for optimism. Although his .225 batting average was hardly dominant, his four home runs and .722 OPS were considerably better than his career MLB production.
That difference could be enough for St. Louis to believe there is something worth developing.
The Cardinals do not necessarily need Pereira to become the player the Yankees once projected him to be immediately. If he can provide useful at-bats, show improved plate discipline and contribute some power, he could potentially become a valuable depth option.
A Fresh Start Could Be Exactly What Pereira Needs
The biggest question now is whether Pereira can take advantage of another opportunity.
His career has already included stops with three MLB organizations, and St. Louis becomes the latest team hoping to discover the version of the player who once ranked among the Yankees’ top prospects.
The Cardinals’ decision to claim him does not guarantee that he will suddenly become a major contributor. Instead, it gives him another chance to prove that his career still has room to develop.
For Pereira, the timing could be significant. At 25, he is still young enough to make adjustments, but he has also accumulated enough professional experience to understand how quickly opportunities can disappear.
His next challenge will be turning that experience into production.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, have little to lose by taking the gamble. They are adding a former highly regarded prospect through waivers rather than surrendering a major trade package. If Pereira finds a way to improve his offensive consistency, the move could prove to be a useful piece of roster business.
If he struggles again, St. Louis will have to reassess its options because of his lack of minor-league flexibility.
For now, however, the story is about opportunity.
Everson Pereira has another organization willing to bet on his potential. The Cardinals have given the former Yankees prospect a new home, and the next step is up to him.
