Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony makes Harrison Burrows transfer admission

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has refuted claims that Sheffield United have withdrawn from negotiations to sign Harrison Burrows. Reports from The Peterborough Telegraph suggested that the deal fell through due to Sheffield United’s hesitation to meet the agreed transfer fee with Posh.

Burrows, who has been a subject of intense transfer speculation this summer, showcased his talent last season with six goals and 14 assists during the regular League One campaign. Peterborough’s fourth-place finish culminated in a playoff semi-final defeat to Oxford United.

Following Peterborough’s playoff disappointment, speculation surrounding Burrows’ future intensified, with clubs like Preston North End and Birmingham City also reportedly interested in securing his services.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has firmly denied reports suggesting that Sheffield United or any other club have withdrawn from agreements to sign any of their players this summer. Addressing the situation via The Peterborough Telegraph, MacAnthony clarified that no deals that were previously agreed upon have fallen through.

Regarding the specific case involving Sheffield United and Harrison Burrows, it was reported that a fee had been agreed between Peterborough and the Championship club, allowing Sheffield United to begin negotiations with the player for personal terms. However, complications have arisen due to Sheffield United’s ongoing ownership situation. The club is currently undergoing a takeover bid, which has yet to be finalized, potentially affecting their ability to complete transfer deals.

Despite reports of an agreement, it appears that the necessary paperwork for the transfer has not been formally signed, leaving room for either club to withdraw from the proposed move. This uncertainty has added complexity to the situation surrounding Burrows and other potential transfers involving Sheffield United.

Harrison Burrows’ importance to Peterborough

Burrows plays a pivotal role in Ferguson’s starting lineup at Peterborough, standing out during their promotion push last season.

However, the chance to significantly boost his salary, reportedly fivefold, is an enticing opportunity for the full-back, who has been with Peterborough since he was nine years old.

Having demonstrated his Championship readiness last season, the 22-year-old may yet continue in League One for another season.

Burrows has until 30 August to settle his future as the transfer deadline approaches.

Burrows saga will drag on

This ongoing transfer saga has now extended into its second month, with the resolution still uncertain.

Sheffield United potentially stepping back from the negotiations might open the door for Birmingham or Preston to pursue a deal. However, they will likely need to match the financial terms that Sheffield United were prepared to offer in order to persuade Peterborough to agree to a transfer.

Burrows is entering the final year of his contract, prompting Peterborough to consider selling him now to avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2025.

If Sheffield United fail to finalize a deal, it would be a significant setback for Chris Wilder’s summer plans and could impact their prospects for promotion.
