The New York Mets are expected to be active this offseason. Beyond making decisions on free agents like Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, the front office is also expected to explore the trade market to improve the team.
One player to watch is St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan, who is considered one of the top infielders available. If the Mets do not re-sign Alonso, they will have a clear need at either second or third base.
Proposed Trade: Mets Acquire Brendan Donovan
A trade for Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan would be a solid move for the Mets to begin the offseason. Donovan has had three consecutive strong offensive seasons, was an All-Star this year, and has consistently posted an OPS+ over 110.
In 118 games this season, he hit 10 home runs and recorded 132 hits.
According to MLB Trade Rumors, Donovan was named the third-most desirable trade candidate. The site noted his versatility as a capable to above-average defender at second base, third base, and the outfield corners, with a “hit-over-power” approach at the plate.
Donovan is entering arbitration and is projected to earn $5.4 million. While he has not hit more than 14 home runs in a season, he is a consistent hitter with an on-base percentage regularly over .340 and a low strikeout rate, which would fit well in the Mets’ lineup.
What Would the Mets Give Up for Donovan?
A trade could unfold in one of two ways. The Cardinals might request one of the Mets’ top prospects, or they could ask for an MLB-ready player like Brett Baty or Mark Vientos, who could immediately join the Cardinals’ lineup.
The Mets are expected to be linked to numerous trade candidates as owner Steve Cohen and the front office aim to return the team to the playoffs after missing them last season.
