The Buffalo Bills are preparing to make a roster move that could see veteran safety Jordan Poyer return to the active roster. Poyer, who rejoined the team this offseason for depth and leadership, has been on the practice squad but is expected to be called up soon following a string of injuries in the secondary.
The team announced that Damar Hamlin has been placed on injured reserve after suffering an injury during the week. Although Hamlin had lost his starting spot to second-year safety Cole Bishop, he remained a key contributor on special teams and provided valuable depth.
Speaking about Hamlin’s setback, Poyer expressed sympathy for his teammate:
“First and foremost, you never want to see anyone get injured. I’m a big fan of D-Ham — a great friend of mine and someone I’ve played a lot of football with,” Poyer said.
The Bills have several options with Poyer, who still has three potential practice squad elevations before requiring a full roster signing. Regardless of the team’s decision, the veteran said he’s fully prepared to step in.
“I’ve played a lot of football in my life,” Poyer added. “If my name is called, I’ll be ready to go out there and play my game.”
Poyer has been a cornerstone of the Bills’ defense since joining the team in 2017, forming one of the league’s best safety duos alongside Micah Hyde. Together, they helped end Buffalo’s 17-year playoff drought and turned the team into a consistent contender.
After salary cap constraints led to his departure in March 2024, Poyer spent last season with the Miami Dolphins, where he recorded 98 tackles and three passes defended in 16 games.
While Poyer is the most experienced option, the Bills may also look to rookie Jordan Hancock to step up. Hancock, who transitioned from nickel cornerback to safety after being drafted, showed strong potential in training camp before battling injuries.
Poyer praised the young player’s ability and mindset:
“He’s a ballplayer athletic, gifted, and has great instincts,” Poyer said. “He reminds me of a young me, maybe even a bit faster and more explosive. I’ve seen his growth already, and I understand why this organization drafted him.”
The Bills’ decision on whether to elevate Poyer or promote Hancock could come in the next few days as the team reshuffles its secondary ahead of Week 6.
