The Buffalo Bills have been hit with a series of defensive injuries just days before their Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Sean McDermott confirmed that linebacker Matt Milano, defensive tackle T.J. Sanders, and safety Damar Hamlin will all miss the upcoming game. Both Sanders and Hamlin are expected to be placed on injured reserve.
The injuries come at a tough time for Buffalo, which is looking to rebound from a disappointing loss to the New England Patriots — a game in which former Bills star Stefon Diggs shined with 10 receptions for 146 yards. Despite Josh Allen’s strong performance, completing 22 of 31 passes for 253 yards and adding 53 rushing yards, the Bills fell short for their first loss of the season.
McDermott explained that Hamlin suffered a pectoral injury during practice, while Sanders has been battling a knee issue that ultimately required surgery. “We were taking it day by day to see if things would improve,” McDermott said. “When it didn’t look like it was getting better, we decided surgery was the best option.”
The timeline for their return remains uncertain. “We don’t know on either of them,” McDermott added. “I feel a bit better about T.J., but Damar’s situation is still up in the air.”
With Hamlin sidelined, McDermott expressed confidence in veteran safety Jordan Poyer, who is expected to step into a more prominent role. “Having a veteran presence like Poyer is important for us,” McDermott noted. “He’s been through a lot and understands what it takes to keep this defense steady.”
The Bills, now dealing with key absences on defense, will need depth and leadership to stay competitive as they face a Falcons team looking to capitalize on Buffalo’s recent struggles.
