The Buffalo Bills are taking their surprising 23–20 home loss to the New England Patriots as a chance to grow and improve. Sunday’s defeat marked Buffalo’s first of the 2025 season, ending their undefeated run. Despite rallying from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game, the Bills couldn’t stop rookie quarterback Drake Maye from leading the Patriots to a game-winning field goal in the final minute.
Head coach Sean McDermott acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the need to treat the setback as a valuable lesson. “We didn’t play our game tonight, and that’s frustrating,” McDermott said, via ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg. “This is a pivotal learning opportunity for us. At times, we tried to get too creative, and overall, we just have to be honest with ourselves and learn from it as a team.”
One of the biggest takeaways from the loss was Buffalo’s continued struggle to contain opposing wide receivers. Former Bills star Stefon Diggs, now with New England, torched his old team with several key catches late in the game — a recurring defensive issue the Bills must address.
Still, McDermott and the players aren’t sounding alarms. It was Buffalo’s first home loss since the 2023–24 playoff defeat to Kansas City, ending a long streak of dominance at Highmark Stadium. Though Josh Allen threw an interception and the offense stagnated at times, the team believes these problems are temporary.
Looking ahead, the Bills will aim to bounce back next week when they travel to face the Atlanta Falcons, hoping to regain their rhythm and refocus on the larger goal of a deep postseason run.
