The New England Patriots suffered a significant setback despite their 23-20 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, running back Antonio Gibson tore his ACL during the game and will miss the remainder of the 2025 season.
Gibson sustained the injury while returning a kick in the second quarter and did not return to the field. Before the injury, he had been a key part of the Patriots’ offense and special teams, serving as the team’s top kick returner and third running back. He led all Patriots rushers with an average of 4.2 yards per carry and was rated by Pro Football Focus as their best pass-blocking back.
In Gibson’s absence, Rhamondre Stevenson will likely carry the bulk of the workload despite ongoing concerns about his ball security—he fumbled again during the Bills game but rebounded with two touchdowns. Rookie TreVeyon Henderson is another option; however, he’s struggled with penalties and pass protection, which could limit his snaps unless those areas improve.
The only other running back currently available is Terrell Jennings, who is on the practice squad. Jennings appeared in three games for New England last season, recording 33 yards on 13 carries. Given the team’s depth concerns, the Patriots are expected to add another running back before their Week 6 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
