NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Buffalo Bills have signed former San Francisco 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky to their active roster. The move comes after Bills punter Cameron Johnston suffered a leg injury in Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints.
Wishnowsky had recently been on the Washington Commanders’ practice squad as insurance for Tress Way, but was released once Way was cleared to play. Now, he joins a 4–0 Bills team considered one of the top Super Bowl contenders this season. He will work alongside veteran kicker Matt Prater and long snapper Reid Ferguson on special teams. Wishnowsky expressed his happiness in joining Buffalo, calling it his “dream club” and saying he’s eager to contribute to a championship run.
This marks the Bills’ fourth punter of the year. The team parted ways with Sam Martin in the offseason, who later signed with the Carolina Panthers. Jake Camarda spent time with Buffalo during preseason but was released in July. Rookie Brad Robbins opened the season as punter but was cut after a poor performance against the Baltimore Ravens. Johnston then took over and performed steadily before his injury. Wishnowsky is now the third punter to take the field for Buffalo in just five games.
If Wishnowsky performs well during Johnston’s recovery, he may secure a longer stay with the team. However, once Johnston returns, the Bills could choose to release Wishnowsky. His performance will ultimately determine his future in Buffalo, though his reputation and popularity from his 49ers days will keep fans closely watching.
Wishnowsky, known to many San Francisco fans as the “Boomin’ Onion,” became a fan favorite after a standout tackle in 2019 preseason action. During his time with the 49ers, he showed versatility by handling kickoffs, extra points, and even making 11 tackles. Despite his toughness and willingness to take on extra duties, injuries plagued his final season in San Francisco. He missed training camp and preseason in 2024 with a knee issue, then was sidelined for the final eight games with a back injury.
Niners fans will remember him for his fearless style of play, a trait carried over from his Australian football background. Now, with renewed energy and a chance to play for the Bills—his self-described dream club—Wishnowsky has an opportunity to write a new chapter in his NFL career.
