Ahead of each home game this season, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has worn a New Era cap designed by a patient at Oishei Children’s Hospital. For Week 4, 12-year-old Charlie Roessler created the latest design.
“It was pretty exciting,” Charlie shared with 7 News. “I really enjoyed making it, and I think it’s really special.” His cap features Allen’s number 17 and the letters “MVP.”
Charlie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, about a year ago. He recently completed chemotherapy and is continuing radiation treatments. His most recent scan showed no signs of cancer. His mother, Heather, said Charlie is feeling good and happy to get back to being a kid. His grandmother, Toni, described him as “brave, smart, and kind.”
The family expressed gratitude to the medical teams at Oishei Children’s Hospital and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as to the Western New York community for their ongoing support.
After Allen wears the cap before Sunday’s game against the Saints, he will autograph it. The hat will then be auctioned online, with all proceeds going to the Patricia Allen Fund at Oishei Children’s Hospital. The auction begins Sunday afternoon and runs until Tuesday at 8 p.m. Patient-designed caps from earlier this season have already raised tens of thousands of dollars.
