Is Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen already the greatest of all time? That question might seem far-fetched to most football fans and analysts, but ESPN’s Mike Greenberg isn’t shying away from it.
After Buffalo’s win over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday Night Football, Greenberg appeared on ESPN’s Get Up and stunned viewers by calling Allen the greatest quarterback to ever play.
“I’m mad at myself that we went nine minutes and I hadn’t said this yet,” Greenberg admitted. “I’ve watched this sport for 50 years. I’m just a fan, a reporter, whatever you want to call it. But no one has ever played the position better than Josh Allen plays it. He’s not the greatest player ever — but tell me who’s played quarterback better than him.”
The claim seemed contradictory. Greenberg argued that no one has ever played the position better than Allen, yet also insisted that Allen isn’t necessarily the greatest ever. When asked to compare Allen to other top quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Justin Herbert, he doubled down.
“I’m not saying he’s better than them,” Greenberg clarified. “I’m saying you can’t play the position any better than Josh Allen does. He does everything. His command of the game right now is ridiculous. The only thing missing is winning. If he had championships, we’d be putting him in the same category as the all-time greats.”
It was a strange and circular argument, but one that got attention. Allen’s talent is undeniable — he’s a two-time All-Pro and a former NFL MVP. Still, labeling him the best right now, let alone the best ever, feels premature. As history has shown, winning titles plays a major role in securing a quarterback’s legacy.
