Over the past few seasons, the Buffalo Bills have established themselves as one of the NFL’s most effective rushing teams, largely due to James Cook and quarterback Josh Allen. Through two weeks of the 2025 season, they’ve been dominant on the ground, powered by an offensive line that is quickly earning recognition as one of the best in the league.
Buffalo is averaging 166 rushing yards per game, giving the team a physical edge that opponents have struggled to counter. In Week 2, the New York Jets were completely unable to contain the Bills’ ground attack. When asked about the success, Allen credited the communication and preparation of the offensive line, highlighting the work of offensive line coach Austin Kromer and assistant Austin Gund. He explained that the staff prepares players for multiple defensive looks throughout the week, and that preparation has paid off in games.
“When you’ve got a group that smart and talented, and running backs who trust what they’re seeing, you usually get good results,” Allen said.
The results are undeniable. James Cook shredded the Jets with 132 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Overall, Buffalo has piled up 332 rushing yards in just two games. Other contributors include Allen himself (89 yards), Ty Johnson (30), Ray Davis (26), and Elijah Moore (14). Together, they’ve already scored six rushing touchdowns this season.
The ground game has set the tone for offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s unit, and that’s without even leaning heavily on Allen’s passing ability yet. With their run-first identity and balanced roster, the Bills look every bit the Super Bowl contender many expected heading into the season. Head coach Sean McDermott’s team is playing some of the best football in the league, and the run game is a big reason why.
