The New York Giants brought in veteran swing tackle James Hudson III during free agency to provide depth and stability to an offensive line that struggled with injuries last season. Hudson, currently filling in at left tackle while Andrew Thomas recovers from a Lisfranc injury, has been a key figure in training camp.
However, concerns arose when Hudson left Wednesday’s practice with an apparent injury. Though he walked off on his own — suggesting it may not be serious — any setback on the offensive line raises red flags, especially given the team’s history.
One potential upside to Hudson’s absence is that it opens up more first-team reps for rookie offensive lineman Marcus Mbow. Drafted in the fifth round out of Purdue, Mbow has already begun to turn heads in camp, impressing the coaching staff and general manager Joe Schoen.
Mbow was initially projected as a guard, but has been slotted into backup roles at both tackle spots — not guard — on the team’s early depth chart, underscoring his versatility. Schoen praised Mbow’s early performance, saying, “He’s done a really good job at left and right tackle. I’m excited to see him in the preseason.”
The Giants’ offensive line remains unsettled. Andrew Thomas is the only starter locked into place — and even his health is uncertain. Evan Neal and Greg Van Roten are still competing at right guard, while center John Michael Schmitz has faced tough battles in practice.
For Mbow, this is a prime opportunity to prove he belongs and potentially carve out a long-term role on a unit that’s long been a weakness for the Giants. As unfortunate as injuries are, they often create chances for others — and Mbow now finds himself in the spotlight with a chance to make an early impact.
