The New York Yankees are expected to make moves at the upcoming trade deadline as they try to strengthen their playoff push. The team currently holds a wild card spot and boasts one of the best records in the American League. General manager Brian Cashman told ESPN that the front office will be “fully engaged” in trade talks to add depth to the roster.
Much of the Yankees’ success this season comes from their captain, Aaron Judge, who is putting up career-best numbers in his tenth year with the team. At age 33, Judge is hitting .355 with a .462 on-base percentage and a .733 slugging percentage. Since signing his $360 million contract, he has won two MVP awards and earned four consecutive All-Star selections, making his deal look like a bargain.
Although his contract runs through 2031, Judge recently discussed his long-term plans, confirming he doesn’t plan to retire when this deal ends. Speaking to The Athletic’s Ian O’Connor, Judge said he hopes to play into his 40s and sign another contract after this one expires. “That’s the plan,” Judge said, indicating he wants to keep playing beyond age 39.
If he maintains his performance into his 40s, Judge could challenge Babe Ruth’s franchise home run record and may add a World Series title or two to his résumé. For now, though, he’s focused on delivering on the promise he made when he signed his current deal. “When I signed this deal, one of the things I promised was that I wanted to come in and be a contributor all the way to the end of that contract,” Judge said. “So hopefully we’ll continue that.”
As he turns in his best season yet, there’s plenty of optimism that Judge can remain a force for years to come — and extend his Yankees legacy before he eventually retires.
