Avalanche Trade Coyle and Wood to Blue Jackets, Add Brindley and Cap Flexibility Ahead of NHL Draft
In a major move just ahead of the 2025 NHL Draft, the Colorado Avalanche traded forwards Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The decision was largely motivated by the need to clear nearly $9 million in salary cap space, allowing Colorado more financial flexibility heading into a pivotal offseason.
In exchange, the Avalanche acquired 20-year-old forward Gavin Brindley, the 77th overall pick in the 2025 draft, and a conditional second-round pick in 2027. Brindley, originally selected in the second round of the 2023 draft, played last season with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters and made a strong international impression at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he won gold and finished second in team scoring.
Charlie Coyle, age 33, joined the Avalanche last season from Boston and recorded two goals and 11 assists in 19 regular-season games. He added one goal during Colorado’s early playoff exit. With one year remaining on his six-year deal and a $5.25 million cap hit, his departure was a calculated move. Miles Wood, who battled injuries and managed only eight points in 37 games, carries a $2.5 million cap hit and is under contract through 2029.
Columbus sees both Coyle and Wood as key veterans to support a developing core. Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell praised their leadership, versatility, and intensity, describing them as ideal fits for the team’s evolving identity. Their experience is expected to strengthen the forward group immediately.
This trade marks a strategic shift for Colorado’s front office, focusing on creating roster balance through veteran departures and youth development. With increased cap space and a promising young forward in Brindley, the Avalanche are well-positioned to make further impactful moves during the draft and free agency period.
