Winnipeg Jets’ newly signed forward Jonathan Toews might take a similar approach to returning to the NHL as Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog did last season.
Insider Elliotte Friedman, in his June 20 “32 Thoughts” blog, drew parallels between Toews’ recent signing with his hometown Jets and Landeskog’s comeback last season. Though their recoveries are different, Friedman pointed out a key similarity: initially, no one was sure if Landeskog’s return would last. Landeskog was able to practice and play back-to-back games in the AHL and then step up to Stanley Cup playoff hockey—performing better than expected.
Landeskog’s return was impressive, especially considering he came back during the intense Stanley Cup playoffs against one of the Western Conference’s top teams. Toews’ situation will differ; he has the advantage of a full summer and a proper training camp to prepare for the NHL.
The Jets are expected to gradually reintegrate Toews into their lineup, possibly limiting him to about 10 to 12 minutes of ice time in his first few games. Fans will be particularly interested to see how Toews performs when the Jets face off against the Avalanche next season.
Colorado Avalanche Were Runner-Up in Toews’ Signing Decision
Toews’ choice to sign with Winnipeg, his hometown team, wasn’t surprising. However, the Colorado Avalanche were reportedly the second choice. Toews’ contract, which includes incentives, would have suited the Avalanche’s salary cap situation, initially counting as $2 million against the cap but potentially increasing as incentives were met.
Had Toews joined Colorado, he would have added depth at center, but similar to Landeskog’s situation, the team wouldn’t have known his full impact until he was back on the ice. It would have been a calculated risk with a high reward potential and relatively low downside.
Since Toews chose Winnipeg, we won’t know how things might have unfolded in Colorado. Still, many hope the 37-year-old three-time Stanley Cup champion can find success and make a meaningful impact in this next chapter of his career.
