Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has quickly become one of the league’s standout players, leading the NFL in rushing touchdowns last season and posting consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns. Despite his production, Cook and the Bills have yet to agree on a long-term contract extension, which could lead to a training camp holdout.
Although losing Cook, even temporarily, would be a significant challenge for most teams, the Bills believe they’re uniquely positioned to manage it. That’s largely due to second-year back Ray Davis, who has impressed throughout the offseason.
Davis, a 2024 fourth-round pick, had a strong rookie season and has continued to earn praise from the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady emphasized Davis’s growth and work ethic, noting his attention to detail and desire to improve.
“For a guy like Ray, who is as conscientious as it gets and wants to be a perfectionist, it’s been really good for him to take a step back, evaluate his play, and study the position on a deeper level,” Brady said.
While Davis has shown he can handle a bigger role, the Bills’ best-case scenario remains a backfield tandem featuring both Cook and Davis. A dual-threat approach could be key for Buffalo’s offensive success in 2025, but it’s reassuring to the organization that Davis is capable of stepping in as a lead back if needed.
