The New York Yankees made a few roster adjustments on June 19. Left-handed pitcher Jayvien Sandridge was called up to the active roster, while reliever Yerry De los Santos was placed on the injured list with discomfort in his right elbow. To make room on the 40-man roster, Oswaldo Cabrera was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
De los Santos had been a reliable option out of the bullpen, posting a 1.80 ERA across 20 innings of work. However, his performance had warning signs, such as a nearly even strikeout-to-walk ratio (13 K, 12 BB). He was removed from a game against the Angels after recording just one out, and the elbow issue raises concern given the nature of such injuries.
Jayvien Sandridge, 26, had been pitching well for Triple-A Scranton before the promotion. In six appearances, he allowed only one run over seven innings. Although he has not yet pitched in the majors, he brings a 3.82 ERA over seven minor league seasons. Originally drafted by the Orioles in 2018, his career began to turn around after joining the Reds, eventually reaching Double-A before a stint with the Padres organization in 2024.
Sandridge has shown strong strikeout ability, averaging 13.4 strikeouts per nine innings throughout his minor league career. However, his command remains inconsistent, as reflected in a high walk rate of 7.2 per nine innings. Despite that, his ability to miss bats makes him an intriguing option for depth in the Yankees’ bullpen.
However, Sandridge’s time on the active roster was short-lived. With pitcher Luke Weaver close to returning, Sandridge was optioned back to the minors without appearing in a game. While his debut may have to wait, the brief promotion shows the Yankees are still exploring all available pitching options amid a stretch of injuries.
