With the Stanley Cup Finals wrapping up and NHL free agency opening on July 1st, trade and signing rumors are in full swing. One persistent rumor involves veteran center and former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews potentially joining the Colorado Avalanche.
Toews, 37, has been out of the NHL for two seasons while recovering from long COVID. In his most recent season (2022–23), he recorded 31 points in 53 games, showing signs of decline but still offering veteran experience. Since he is not currently under contract, Toews is free to speak with interested teams before officially signing after July 1st.
According to NHL insiders, Colorado and Toews’ hometown team, the Winnipeg Jets, are seen as the most likely destinations. Both teams have a need for depth at center. For the Avalanche, signing Toews could make veteran Charlie Coyle—and his $5.3 million cap hit—expendable. A potential deal with Toews would likely include a modest base salary with performance-based bonuses, minimizing financial risk.
While the move isn’t guaranteed, the Avalanche’s history of giving veterans a second chance makes this a plausible scenario. The final decision could come down to roster fit and what Toews believes he can still bring to the ice.
