JUST IN: Deep Purple Release New Song

Deep Purple have released a new song titled “Lazy Sod” from their upcoming album =1, set to drop on July 19th.

The track, just shy of four minutes, features heavy guitar riffs and a strong organ presence, evoking the band’s signature sound.

The British rock icons keep a steady rhythm before diving into ascending scales in the choruses and showcasing a prog-rock organ breakdown in the bridge.

Lead singer Ian Gillan delivers introspective lyrics reflecting on aging (he turns 79 next month) and the chaotic state of the world: “The world’s on fire, and I can’t get my ass out of bed / The world is on fire, smoke all around my head.”

In a recent interview with ROCKS magazine, Gillan shared the backstory behind the song’s title and its themes (via the band’s press release).

“A young journalist recently asked me how many songs I’ve written in my life,” Gillan said. “I told them the last time my assistant counted, twenty years ago, it was over 500.

I felt proud until she mentioned Dolly Parton’s 5,000 songs and called me a lazy sod. I had to agree, and I jotted the conversation down in my notebook.”

=1 will be the band’s first album featuring guitarist Simon McBride, who joined Deep Purple after the departure of longtime guitarist Steve Morse in 2022, when Morse left to care for his ailing wife.

The group’s current lineup includes classic members Ian Gillan (vocals), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums), alongside longtime keyboardist Don Airey. Renowned producer Bob Ezrin has also returned to helm the album.
