JUST NOW: 2 Indiana Players have left the program

Incoming guard Kanaan Carlyle narrowly qualified for this series, having averaged just over the required 25 minutes per game during the 2023-24 season, with 25.1 minutes per game at Stanford.

Due to the limited sample size and the fact that Carlyle didn’t play in Mike Woodson’s system or alongside the same caliber of teammates he will have in 2024, making comparisons is challenging.

However, Carlyle’s position as an off-guard and his fairly common physical profile—standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 185 pounds—provide some basis for evaluation.

Carlyle’s role at Indiana is still uncertain. He will be competing for playing time in a crowded backcourt that includes Myles Rice, Trey Galloway, Gabe Cupps, Jakai Newton, and Anthony Leal. Therefore, it’s important to keep an open mind when drawing comparisons.

Looking at Carlyle’s traditional statistics from his time at Stanford, he averaged 11.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He shot 38.6% from the field and 32% from beyond the arc, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 185 pounds.

Carlyle’s advanced statistics, as provided by sports-reference.com, include 0.5 win shares and an 11.5 Player Efficiency Rating (PER). He had a 27.7% usage rate, a 19.5% assist rate, a 6% total rebounding rate, and a minus-0.5 defensive box plus-minus rating.

The traditional statistics generated more potential comparisons for Carlyle than the advanced metrics, primarily due to his low 0.5 win share, which placed him below many of the players he otherwise matched up with.
