Investigation: Where are Utica records of cop crashes, injuries?

Police officers have been involved in hundreds of car crashes in New York over the past few years, often without facing consequences. But what about in our city?

A few departments, such as the Oneida County Sheriff and Sherrill City Police Department, have partially responded to our requests, but many others have not acknowledged our inquiries or provided any updates since last year. The records we are requesting are public documents.

So far, we have submitted 193 Freedom of Information requests to obtain detailed crash records from police departments across the state, along with about 20 additional requests for documents like union contracts and vehicle pursuit policies.

In early 2023, the USA TODAY Network-New York collaborated with Syracuse University’s Newhouse School to investigate police vehicle crashes in New York. We expanded our efforts to secure crash records from police departments and began examining the human and financial impact on communities where police officers appear to be driving recklessly without facing punishment or implementing measures to prevent future incidents.

Our focus has been on departments in some of New York’s most populous counties, as well as in counties where the USA TODAY Network has news outlets. However, we have not yet requested crash records from every police department in the state.
